JOCKEY JOHNNY LONGDEN FLYING LILL SCORES UNDER LONGDENS GUIDANCE ARLINGTON HEIGHTS 111 July 18 Johnny Longden of Calgary Canada has become the delight of Arlington Park fans riding four winners Tuesday after having started the current week off with five win ¬ ners Monday Tuesdays victories raised his total for the meeting to thirtysix The Canadian boy made a oneday stand in New York recently and had a big day there also Cleary Filly Lasts to Win Springfield Handicap by Head Margin Feature Triumph Second of Day for Calgary Jockey JockeyWho Who Pilots Four Winners Nearly Duplicating DuplicatingHis His Feat of Monday When He Rode Five Jockey Johnny Longden who rode five winners here yesterday came back to handle four today Besides Flying Lill and Threadneedle Longden also scored with Eight and Six and Catomar ARLINGTON HEIGHTS HI July 18 Mrs C H Clearys Flying Lill winner of the Arlington Matron Stakes and the Kentucky Oaks added another victory to her years score when she captured the featured Spring ¬ field Purse at Arlington Park this afternoon The victory was her eighth in ten starts this year and it increased her earnings for 1939 to 13905 Only four threeyearolds opposed the daughter of Flying Heels and Laila Wild Montsin being second and Briery third Yale 0 Nine which ran fourth and Lightspur were the only other contestants The distance was six furlongs Flying Lill which was ridden by Johnny Longden the saddle star of the meeting broke last but before going a half mile caught the quickbreaking Lightspur on the turn then the Cleary filly took the lead upon reaching the stretch and drew away As Lightspur began beganto to tire Briery on the inside moved into second place and held that position until Montsin closing on the outside made her bid The latter passed Briery just inside the final furlong and then set sail for the leader which however lasted to score by a head Montsin in turn beat Briery three quarters of a length for second place and Yale O Nine was another length away Lightspur tiring badly was a distant last lastODDSOX ODDSOX CHOICE CHOICEFlying Flying Lill performing on a muddy track ran the threequarters in 112 under 115 pounds and those who supported her in the mutuels received 4to5 for their invest ¬ ments The victory was Longdens second of the afternoon afternoonNo No rain fell during the afternoon but the track was muddy A fairsized crowd how ¬ ever was in attendance attendanceJockey Jockey Longden scoring his third triumph of the day and Morris Vehons Threadneedle made up a winning combination in the sixth race another at six furlongs which served as the principal supporting event Running down the heavilysupported Polycletus in the stretch Threadneedle got up near the end to win by a length and onehalf and paid 1760 for 2 in the mutuels mutuelsTEPERWINE TEPERWINE REPEATS REPEATSThe The Myrtle Maroon Stables Teperwine guided by J E Oros scored his second straight victory when he defeated eleven other threeyearold sprinting platers in the first race Going in his best form and at no disadvantage in the muddy footing the colt followed in closest pursuit of Sis Lotties pace to the stretch and then taking the lead on the inside held his rivals safe the rest of Continued on thirtysecond page
