GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Apparently jumping is to have a boom in the east next spring and summer. A ,000 steeplechase and a ,500 hurdle race stake are to be added attractions at Morris Park alone and all the clubs are making increased provisions for the jumpers. The natural effect is an increase in the number of horses in the timber-topping brigade. In the list, of entries to the Greater New York Steeplechase and the Kensington Hurdle Handicap at Gravcsend appear the names of Nuto, Chalmers, Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, Dr. Catlett, The Tory, Wolhurst, King T., Semper Ego and Premier as beginners at the game. If Dr. Catlett jumps well he should become a champion at the illegitimate style of racing and Semper Ego has frequently been pointed out by good judges as a horse that would make a rarely good hurdler if given a chance. The story that schooling will tell is yet to come but of the others Wolhurst, Nuto, Premier and King T. all have to their credit better performances on the flat than the average grade of horses usually devoted to jumping and their advent promises well for the future of the sport. Apart from the closing of important stakes, the week promises to be brimful of business affecting owners, trainers and riders. Thursday the Jockey Club will hold its annual meeting and some significant rulings are anticipated. DateB for the coming season are to be allotted. But the point of most vital interest to the racing community will be raised by steward Andrew Miller, who will move the adoption of the following amendment to the racing rules : A jockey under suspension shall not be permitted to ride for any one during the period of his suspension. This clause, if adopted, will be one of the most stringent brought into force up to date. It is an open secret that the official starter last year was handicapped severely by the absence of such a rule. The Racing Calendar of January 5 announces a racing partnership between August Belmont and his trainer, J. J. Hyland. The registered combination has a formidable stable in preparation for the coming campaign, including: Merry Prince, 5: Octagon, 5: Firearm, 4; Sun Dream, 3; Filon dOr, 3; Lady Madge, 3; Catapult. 3; Fly by Night, 3; All Gold, 2; Brigadier, 2; Fluke, 2; Fond Hopes, 2; Gold Lack, 2; Gold Stream, 2; Lady of the Vale, 2; Magnificent, 2; Oketee, 2; Bed Path, 2; Kilogram, 2, and an unnamed bay colt, by Magnetizer Rushlight.
