v X MISS MAKIONS RACING RECORD. Just now Barney Schreibers clinking filly Miss Marion is out of sorts. The glorious climate of California does not seem to have agreed -with the fast daughter of Himyar and Astolat, and on acconnt of her indisposition she has been declared out of the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps. Miss Marion is named after the only daughter of the writer. Her namesake just now is in winter quarters at Woodlands, Mr. Schreibers noble farm at Bridgeton, Mo. In 1895 Mr. Schreiber bought a bay filly by Himyar Astolat, which, at the farm, showed marvellous speed. But she got away from her exercisers one day and hurt herself so that she had to be destroyed. When at the Chicago Tattersalls July 26, 1897 sale Major B. G. Thomas offered a bay filly by Himyar and Astolat, Mr. Schreiber wired the Editor of Daily Racing Form from St. Louis to buy her. She was secured for 25 and sent to Woodlands. The filly was a handsome and clean cut bay youngster, with white points and a star, and while in a roomy box stall at Leihys Fashion Stables was named. She was fast from the first, but inclined to dislike weight. A month or so after the filly wag bought, Schreibers farm superintendent, M. C. Hubbell, went to Kentucky and bought her dam, the Kisber mare Astolat. who had produced Asia and Asben amoDg other fast ones. Astolat s produce of this year, by Foul Shot, is already entered in the Futurity of 1901, and St. Louis Derby of 1902. Miss Marion is fast and trua when in sharp condition. The filly is less than sturdy, though likely to gather stamina with age. Miss Marions debut, aptly enough, was for the Debutante Stakes at St. Louis, May 19, which she won in a canter by four lengths from Iris and six other fillies. The four and a half furlongs was done in 56 and it was evident she coull hava gone much faster had it been necessary. Two days later she beat Sir Blaze, Leo-stratus and four others at five f urlon gs over a heavy track in 1:05 1. She was then brought to Chicago and started for the Petite Stakes at Harlem. So great was her reputation that she was a 1 to 2 favorite over a strong field, but she did not look well and it was probable the trip on the cars had deranged her temporarily. She ran unplaced, the raca falling to the great filly Black Venus. The race took place June 1, and after it was over it was seen that Miss Marion was a sick filly. She was taken back to St. Louis and given a chance to rest and recuperate. Her next start was at St. Louts, July. 4, in a five and a half furlong dash for a purse. Chancery 103, was first, Miss Marion 112, second. Then she won four races in succession. July 11, she beat Evelyn Byrd, Chancery, and eight other two-year-olds, five furlongs in 1:021. July 16, she won a shandicap from Be Trne, Leo Planter, and six others by six lengths, pulling up. Time, 1:091. July 20, she ran away from Miss Josephine, Georgie and ten other fillies, winning pulled doable in the same time for five and a half furlongs. July 30, Miss Marion was started against The Chomist and Belle of Memphis, both then in great form, and made a show of them. She ran the first half so fast that they were done for, and won by ten lengths pulled to a canter, six furlongs in 1:155. The filly was then brought back to Chicago and at Hawthorne, September 3, ran third to Ailyar and Espionage with Rush, Formoro and other good ones behind her. September 12 at the same track she was unplaced to Spirituollc, Tulla Fonso and Oleskaatfive furlongs in 1:011. October 4, track slow, Timemaker beat ther at six furlongs, but May W., Dave Waldo, Sorrow and other speedy sprinters were behind her. Then she tried for the 0,000 Stallion Stakes at Hawthorne and at the end Alpon beat her something more than a half length. Dr. Eichberg, Jinks, Sir Hubert, The Barrister and Sea Lion were among those behind. October 10 Miss Marion beat Paul Griggs, Jolly Roger, Espionage and three others easily at six furlong3 in 1:151 in a purse race at Harlem. October 13 Timemaker and Basquil beat her in a mile dash at Harlem in which she was so unwisely hurried that she was fifteen lengths in the lead turning into the stretch. October 17, Abuse, Timemaker and Donna Rita finished in front of the filly at three-quarters of a mile. Her next and her last start of the year was at the Ingle-side track, San Francisco, where the fast filly, Maud Ferguson, beat her at five furlongs but had to run in 1 :00Jr and make a new track record to do it. The start of the race was a horror. As a three-year-old Miss Marion has run thrice at San Francisco and won two out of her three starts, but she has been ailing more or less and was so much out of form that she could not be started for the California Oaks, an event that BAENET SOHBEIBEKS FABT FILLY, MISS MARION, BY HIMYAR ASTOLAT. fit and good she could hardly have lost. Her tabulated record to date is as follows : Yr. Age.Races. 12 3 Unp. Won. 1898 2 17 8 4 2 3 $ 4,965 1899 3 3 2 0 1 0 730 Total 2 20 10 4 3 3 $ 5,695
