HABLEM RACING, n A The crowd that went to Harlem yesterday ex- pecting to find the going deep and stiff weie g St. greatly surprised when they saw the course. Instead of being stiff and lumpy it was smooth bs and safe and fairly good time was made over it. If no rain falls before racing time today the track will be fast and an excellent card is offered for the closing of Harlems second two weeks term. Track Superintendent Billy Myers deserves a word of compliment for his work on the course. After the races, Thursday afternoon, he set lo work with three harrows and worked them continually for nineteen hours. Yesterdays racing feature was a condition j affair at one mile. It bad seven starters, and all of them bad quite a bit of weight up. Tlia gave the most experienced joskeys a chance to ride. The batting on it ,was fast, and every I horse entered seemed to be backed with the exception of the natural favorite, Maceo. He opened at 7 to 5 and kept going up io the quota- tions until post time, when the tine was offering 4 to 1 and crying out for the money. The judges heard that something was wrong, though thoj knew nothing at all of the betting, and thought it a wiBO plan to change jockey3 on Maceo. Overton was up, but going lo the post the judges took him down and substituted Nutt. The . "bookies" and turf speculators have a high measure of respect for jockey Nutt now, and when the change waB made it almost caused a panic in the betting ring. Quicker than a flash . Maceoa price was rubbed to 21 to 1. The change of riders proved a healthy one, and Nutt, handling Maceo to perfection, won as he pleased by about a length from Benneville. Keens and Ryans Pirate of Penzance Katie Ht colt, Phallas, long overdue and at a juicy price, won the three-quarter of a mile two-year-old race easily. This seems to be a fair colt, but in bis other local races he ran below his notch. Pros-tome beat him easily the last time the pair met, but in this race ho baat Prestome away off. The ring got hurt quite severely on the first race. It offered 10 to 1 against Lovable in the opening betting but this price -was cut, under heavy play, to 4i to 1 by post time. The filly ran as the batting indicated she would and after getting away none two well she weaved her-way through on the far ttuffl and going to the front In the straight, eveatdally won by three parts of a length froji Postmaster Bailey. Nick Hall at last broke his streak of bad luck and won a purse with Canace in the second race. The filly had Nutt up and was the bet. ting choice at 9 to 5. She got away in front but Nutt took her back down the backstretch, and holding a good position all the way, he came away when ready and cleverly defeated Cuirassier. Heroics, after much bad luck, finished third. Warren Point dropped into his class in the fifth race and over a track that was just to his liking, easily defeated Roger B., who was not ready, but ran a good race. The ling was out of line about Warren Point and offered 10 to 1 against him. The last race, a mile selling affair, was a soft thing for Bethlehem 8tar. The gelding was favorite at the liberal price of 2 to 1. He is a slow beginner and during the early stages of the journey did net seem to have a chance. At the half mile ground though, Beauchamp made his move, and Bethlehem Star moved to the fore like a flash, When the stretch was reached he waB in front and won fighting for his head by three lengths. Woodard and Shanklin will sell at public auction Saturday, July 15, in the Hawthorne pad-dock, all the horses belonging to J. K. Red- n A g St. bs mon, H. Li. Frank, W. H. Laudeman and Miles Finlen.
