NOW HAWTHORNES TORN. With this day Harlems second fortnight of racing comes to a close. As a whole the meeting has been all that could be asked for, the only drawback worth mentioning being the unlucky rainfall of July 4 that deprived both of the lecal racing clubs of a solid sum of gate money and has since kept the Harlem course in the condition horsemen and turf followers abhor. Tho attendance throughout has been generous and tho racing clean and marked by many inspiring and nobly contested finishes. By the time the opening day of the next meeting arrives the new grandstand will be completed in all details. Hawthorne reopens Monday. Secretary Kuhl has issued the program for the first week. It provides steeplechases for Monday, Thursday and Saturday, The cross-country events are popular, but so far there has been a lack of good and experienced timber-toppers. This deficiency will soon bs remedied, howevor. The owners of the majority of jumpers on the northern circuit have signified their intention to bring their horses here at once. The arrival of a dozen or more well-seasoned jumpers will serve to add interest and variety to the "illegitimate" branch of racing. In the flat racing department, the daily ords are intelligently devised and all classes of horses are libsrally provided for. The powerful Schorr Stable is to arrive at Hawthorne early next week and itB horses will no doubt soon be annexing their full share of the liberal purses provided by the local associations. Its jockey, T. Burns, will be a welcome addition to the present somewhat ineffective list of riders. With good weather some extremely fast and noteworthy racing can confidently be expected at Hawthorne in the course of the ensuing two weeks.
