j j j I I NOTES OF THE TURF. After the Withers had been run and won h Kilmarnock, Mr. J. E. Madden made a happ* suggestion, reminding Mr. W. C. Whitney, th-colts owner, that Sir Dixon, sire of Kilmarnock had won the Withers in 1888, aud that nrevious to his winning Mr. Green B. Morris had soli him to the Dwyer brothers for $"20,000. the same price Mr. Whitney paid for Kilmarnock. Mt Madden intimidated that if the purchase prio * of Kilmarnock were increased by the sum • one dollar, turf historians could with facility recall the fact that the son had sold for BMM money than the sire. Mr. Whitney cheerfully "anted up," and Mr. Madden has an heirloom now. At the dispersal sale of the late Mr. W. H-Clark, Banastar. the crack of the stab.-1 brought 1,000. Banastar wa formerly owned by Oots Bros., of this city. The Oot.~ are now quartered at the Latonia race track. Th*j have in their stable a two-year-old brother t Banastar. called Atmore, which is credited witk being the best two-year-old ever trained ove the Kenton course. This colt worked five furlongs in 1 :0.i with about 118 pounds up Tuesda/ morning. The colt ran away from his boy. a* he was instructed to work the distance in 1:1 —Thoroughbred Record. The grand stand, betting paddock and othai frame buildings on the Clifton race track -. Clifton, N., J., were destroyed by fire early oa the morning of May 15, involving a loss of abo 00,000. The blaze made a brilliant spectacle and lit up the surrounding country for mile-. The fire broke out about midnight, and sprea i so rapidly that by the time the firemen arrived it was impossible to save anything except som-f sheds and frame buildings extending from tfaa entrance to the track. The fire burned nntii nearly daylight. Five car loads of horses left New York la-r. Wednesday for Toronto, Can., where the Ontaric Jockey Club will give its spring meeting, beginning May 24. Among the owners represents i were Messrs S. M. Street, E. Peters, M. Daly. F D. Weir, J. E. Seagram, D. Higgins and W. W Lyles. Mr. Peters took along Gold Lack, whicd he purchased for 00 from H. Eugene Leigh The latter bought Gold Lack for 50. The Prince of Wales has purchased the Ame ican bred David II., 6, by Tenny yuesal, aa i he will be used to lead Diamond Jubilee in hi? work. David II. has been a winner in England and he. Maximo Gomez. Trumpet and Tommr Atkins give Quesal, his dam, a great record as . producer of winners. Jockey J. Ranch, a diminutive 85-pound bo? who rode with much success on the California tracks last year, has arrived in the east, and will ride "free lance" for the balance of the season.
