HARLEMS STAKE PROGRAM. Secretary Nathanson. of the Harlem Jockey Club, pronounced last night the dates upon which the Stake events will be run at the Harlem spring meeting, which will open Saturday, June 9. They are as follows: Saturday, June 9, The Austin Stakes, for three-year-olds and upward, 1 1-16 miles. ,000. Tuesday, June 12, The Proviso Stakes, for two-year-olds, 5-8 mile, ,800. Thursday, June 14. The Illinois Stakes, for three-year-olds and upward, 34 mile, ,000. Saturday. June 16, The Youngster Stakes for two-year-olds, five furlongs, ,800. The Derby trial special stake will also be run June 16. Tuesday, June 19, The Chicago Stakes for three-year-olds and upward, one mile, ,000. Thursday. June 21, The Junior Stakes for two-year-olds, 5 1-2 furlongs, ,600. It will be an overnight sweepstakes and it should be worth nearly ,500 to the winner. This stake event is similar to the Senior Stakes of 1898. run at Harlem and won by Warrenton. who ran second to Pink Coat in the American Derby that year. From the above it will be seen that June 16 will be a gala day at Harlem, as practically two stake events will be contested that afternoon. The Derby trial stake will be at 1 1-8 miles, and in it it is highly probable a majority of the American Derby candidates will take each others measure. This race was a devised one by Mr. Nathanson at the solicitation of horsemen who have thoroughbreds entered in Am American Derby. In this years trial event the following horses are among the probable starters: Lieutenant Gibson. Advance Guard, Florizar. All Gold, Yellow Tail. Imp, John Baker. Warrenton and other good ones now on their way to Harlem. The Chicago Stakes at one mile on Tuesday. June 19 will also be in the nature of a Derby tryout. Books for the Harlem spring meeting will be issued by Secretary Nathanson early next week. They will provide for steeplechase races on Mondays. Wednesdays and Saturdays of each week. The long course over the timber will be two and one-half miles in length, and the short course will measure one and three-quarter miles long, both finishing upon the inside track.
