SAM PHILLIPS 1JKATEX AGAIN. After Barney Schreibers streaks of luck Saturday he concluded that he was done, and sold his Lissak— Caroline Hamilton colt Tayon to C. W. Chappell. Tayon was entered in the laBt race at Washington Park yesterday and Barney Bold him with the proviso that he was to receive half out of the first purse that the colt won. At the time of the sale Schreiber hardly thought that Tayon had a chance to beat the horses he was in with, but it turned out that Mr. Chappell. who bought the colt, knew what he was about, and when Tayon, after running a high class race, poked his head in front of Livadia. Mr. Chappell won a swell bet and naturally gave Mr. Schreiber the laugh. Tayon b race was certainly a fine one, and on him jockey H. Stuart, who has been on the sick list for some weeks, rode a cracking good race. It was the boys first mount since he fell and broke hi6 collar bone at Hawthorne, and naturally enough he was a trifle timid at the post, but after the start he settled down to business and feeling his way along carefully in the first part of the race he waited patiently until well straightened away for home before he made his move, and then, with clever judgment, he rode an excellent finish witli his hands, gaining a well-deserved decision. Everyone that journeyed to the track expected to see the horses race in the mud owing to the heavy downpour of rain early Monday morning but they were agreeably disappointed as a mile was run in 1 :39i, which is the best time made around Chicago so far this year. The Sprite, a fine looking filly by Deceiver— The Wraith, was the horse to run the fast mile and in doing so she easily beat Pat Dunnes Alcedo who was heavily backed by the public and also the Hawthorne contingent. The race between Advance Guard and Sam Phillips, at nine furlongs, was a beauty, but at the end there way nothing to it. Advance Guard winning quite handily by a half length, thereby deciding without a doubt which of the two was the better colt. Mr. Dwyer presented Silverdale with the two-year-old race. He let the Schorr colt off flying about two lengths in frout and after a hard drive Silverdale beat Green Morris Schoolmaster by a scant length. With twenty-six pounds off from her last race Anthracite cleverly beat Potenteaud Greatland in the initial mile and seventy yards condition race. Tommy Knight rode Anthracite, and handled her to perfection. Pope Leo, fit and ready and with Caywood up. stepped three-quarters of a mile in 1 :131, incidentally beating Rollins and Shrove Tuesday without a struggle. W. S. Barnes, after Fancy Woods race Saturday, looked over his horses at the stable and concluded they were so thin and poor that he was going to send them to Melbourne to rest and feed. Jockey L. Rose was given a three days set down by the starter for refusiuK to break with Lomond. William L. Oliver, it is reported, will go ea.-t Boon with his horses. Word has been sent to him that they cannot get along at Brighton Beach without his presence, and he is always willing to oblige. Jockeys Caywood and Buchanan were given 0 fines for disobedience while at the poet. A grand contest is expected when Lieutenant Gibson. Sidney Lucas and Advance Guard meet in the Sheridan Stakes Wednesday.
