Apropos of the discussion of the prevalent prejudice against "first foals" of mares, Com-i mando, the champion two-year-old of the first half of the year, is the "first foal" of Emma C. II.. and Dr. Barlow, by Chorister, who won the Choice Stakes at Brighton, July 7, beating Out-lander a half length. with the third horse. Petra II., six lengths back, with Lief Prince and Great American behind them, the "first foal" of her dam, Illogical, by Aerolithe. out of Paradox. This was a creditable performance, as Petra II. showed herself a good filly three days later by winning at five i furlongs, beating Snark a length and a half, with Princess Otillie. The Regent and eight others behind them. Both Commando and Dr. Barlow were bred in the Castleton Stud of Mr. Jamas R. Keeue. which is under the management of Major F. A.
