SCALES RIVERSIDE STAKES. Despite the intense heat there was an enormous crowd at Harlem yesterday to witness the running of the Riverside Selling Stakes. This stake fixture is at seven furlongs under selling conditions, which means practically an owners handicap, and on paper the seven horses entered seemed about on a par. Consequently at post time it was 3 to 1 aud take your pick. The result of this contest goes to show how-uncertain racing is. On paper it .-eemed that the horse that won would have to stretch his neck to the very limit, and Scales, considering his last performance at Hawthorne, hardly figured to have a chance. Still, Scales won. and won with the greatest ease, thereby knocking form calculations on this race into a "cocked hat. Scales belongs to Pat Dunne, who bears an excellent reputation on the turf. His honesty iu racing horses has never been questioned. But after the colt came home in front of a good lot of three-year-olds, in the face of his poor showing at Hawthorne July 23. when lie was a stanch public favorite at 3 to 5 over an ordinary lot, set some of the -caudal mongers tongues to wagging. Winkfield rode Scales, and after the field had gone a sixteenth of a mile it was evident to those that watched the race closely that the boy was aware of the fact that he was on the best horse, and lie naturallv proceeded to take matters easily. Down the backstretch Scales was simply "buck-jumping" in fourth place, and Winkfield held him back cleverly until the stretch was reached, when he went to the front like a flash, eventually winning with the greatest of ease by two open lengths from The Lady. Scales opened at 3 to 1 and receded in the betting to 7 to 1. so it is evident that Mr. Dunne, or iu fact very few others, benefited by his sudden return to his best form. Not only was Scales sudden improvement a facer to the followers of form, but it was hardly as sharp as was the improvement of L. D. Fra-zees Rowland— France.- Nichols colt Dandy Jim. This colt was badly beaten by ordinary youngsters at three-quarters of a mile in 1:154 the last time he started, August 21. at Hawthorne, but yesterday he fairly romped home five and a half furlongs in the fast time of 1 H735. It may be that the difference in tracks brings about these sudden changes of form, but whatever it is it certainly is exasperating to the rigid followers of form. Starter Dwyer seems to have left his good eye at Windsor when he came away and his work the last two days has been below his usual good average. Of course the fields were large, as a rule, yesterday and this lets the prince of starters out to some extent, but still only one good one i6 credited to him during the afternoon and that will hardly do for him. Mr. Dwyere good start came in the last race, which was a condition affair at one mile and seventy yards, won by John Baker, with The Lady in Blue second and Mint Sauce third. Etta has not been running well since her fall at Wathington Park and for this reason the ling took liberties with her. in with an ordinary ,ot at a mile aud seventy yards. She was quoted at 6 to 1 in the opening betting, but under strong backing her price was cut to 4 to 1 by post tijiio. The filly has evidently rounded to and she "delivered the goods like a good one. There were thirteen starters iu the first race ! and eighteen in the second, and strange to say both events were won by 16 to 5 chances, Sortie , being the fortunate one in the first race and I John Qriffsbj iu the second. Secretary Nathanson yesterday made known i the condition? of the extra race to be run at Harlem Saturday, August 18. They are as follows: Distance, two and one-quarter miles; purse, , of which 00 to second and 0 to third. Winner to be sold at auction. ,600, 5 lbs. above the scale : 1 lb. allowed for each 00 to 00. The gross valuation of the Riverside Stakes amounted to ,300. and Pat Dunnes portion of it through Scales win was ,025. Starter Dwyer imposed fines upon Jockeys Tally and Tully yesterday.
