GARRY HERMA XS COURAGE The feature of the racing at Hawthorne yes ¬ terday was the first appearance of Garry Her ¬ mann the western favorite for tho American Derby He was called upon to meet The Con ¬ queror II Boney Boy Tayon and Strangest un ler mild weight in the eight and onehalf fur ¬ longs handicap fourth on the card The Con ¬ queror II and Tayon declined the issue yet the race was a glorious one Bonoy Boy ran one of hie best races and Garry Hermanns metal was tested to tho limit to beat him by a head He did it by sheer courage It was an ordinary race to the stretch There Boney Boy got to Hermann andtho two had a hnirlifting strug ¬ gle to the end Hermann and the Bradley geld ¬ ing fought it out stride for stride Twenty yards from tbo finish tho class and gamenoss of Hermann told and he beat Boney Boy a head on the post The race takes away nothing from Hermanns quality He can only be screwed up to tho point of racing perfection in actual con ¬ test and yestBrdaye was one that will do him much good The liuih roused tho big crowd to tha highest point of enthusiasm enthusiasmThe The afternoons racing outside tho star event was fair to see the crowd a large one and tho footing fast A strong wind ground down the keen edge of speed speedA A big and very ordinary lot gathered for tho first race and Haydon the favorite off badly ran a good race but could get no nearer to the front than fifth the winner turning up in Ernest Parham off well and full of speed Hans Wag nor ran a better race than the winner winnerThe The second race at a mile fell to the oddson favorite Operator who was put to a drivo at the end to beat Omdurman OmdurmanThe The third race at five furlongs was won by Magi a fast filly also at oddson She had an easy time of it itMerito Merito thn favorite won tho fifth race at a mile and the closing event a threequarter dash fell to the well backed Alice Dougherty who ran to the form shown on the California tracks and beat Rival Dare in a merry drive
