ED AUSTINS TEST STAKES The mnddy track and threatening weather did not dater lovers of racing from going to Hawthorne yesterday and despite these unfav ¬ orable conditions a largo crowd was on hand and witnessed an excellent days sport Thirty books drew in and ae aptcnlation was brisk throughout the afternoon the pencilera were kept busy handling tho money The faatnra of the day was the Test Stakes a sweepstakes for twoyearolds five and a half furlongs with 1000 added Ed Austin George Bennetts con ¬ sistent colt was made an even money favorite and justified the confidence placed in him by his many supporters by handling his crush ¬ ing impost like a major and winning in rather handy fashion Holtman got the youngsters off at the first break to an excellent start Momnon dashed into the load opening a gap of two lengths from Nellie Waddell with the rest of tho field fairly close up with the ex ¬ ception of Commissioner Forster ho being beaten off before a quarter had been run Noaring the half Ed Austin and Jaubort both moved up to Nellie Waddells saddle skirts but Memnon still continued in the lead with a snug advantage Straightened for home Ed Austin gradually closed on the leader throatlatching him at the eighth post with South Trimble and Jaubart necks apart about a length away Ed Austin had awnng wide at tho head of the stretch and drew an outside position After shaking off Uemuon he drew away handily but had to be shaken up in the closing strides to stall off Jaubert and South Trimbles bid near the wire He was well tired when cross ¬ ing the line and swerved slightly to ¬ ward the judges stand but won all ont by a length while Janbert barely lasted long enough to beat tho fast closing Bouth Trimble a head for second place Memnon tired palpably in the last eighth Commissioner Forster came with a rush at the end after clos ¬ ing much ground in the last quarter Nollio Waddell had enough after running a half mile mileThe The steeplechase ended in a farce Captain Conover winning by courtesy Without mis ¬ chance the best he could have done would have been to finish third as Dick Fnrber fall over the ninth jump and Lord Chesterfield bolted at the same place both being two lengths in front of Captain Couover at the time After this he slowly galloped home winxing by thirty lengths from Chancery Clay remounted Dick Fnrber and want on over the course then died away Denman Thompson tired badly in tho last eighth eighthTho Tho finale was the best race of tho day Es ¬ pionage backed for a killing winning on the post in a desperate finish by a neck from Bam Lazarna Esq he beating Henry of Traatamare a head for second place Espionage ran a sen ¬ sational race and was virtually left at the post She was five lengths back of the last horse at the first tnrn but Ranch persevered with her and by dint of a splendid rido finally got her up in time to win on the post It was a great run and was greeted with vociferous cheering from the grand stand Sam Lazarus Esq and Mondoro ran closely together to tho run in where the latter retired and Henry of Trasta maro joined the leader Tho two were fighting it out desperately when Espionage came with a rush in the closing strides and beat them both out
