, NOTES OF THE TURF. Ard Patrick, winner of this years English Derby, will hardly be a starter in the St. Leger. According to Sporting Life of July 19 he developed a lameness on July 17 and on this, account was withdraw from the Eclipse Stakes. There is keen disappointment at the mishap to the great three-year-old, for racegoers on the other side wanted to see another duel between him and Sceptre, the champion filly of the year and winner of the Oaks. James R. Keene was among the visitors at the Carlsbad races on July 10. He had the pleasure of seeing Fred Taral win a race, and later invited the jockey up to his box, where he introduced him to his friends. The millionaire and the well-known rider discussed American racing and the days when Taral rode some horset that sported the Keene colors. Milton Young, McGrathiana Stud, has ten weanlings by Mirthful this year. He patronized the sire of Mexican so extensively last year on the strength of John E. Maddens recommendation, who always has believed that Mirthful would be a successful sire. Hinde and Baker, of Lexincton, Ky., have sold to George C. Bennett, Memphis, the yearling bay colt by Falsetto Fright, by Virgil, second dam Alarmist, by Alarm. The price was ,500. The colt is a brother to Flywheel, and is engaged in the Futurity. Trainer Charles Dodson arrived at Lexington from St. Louis last week and is now in charge of S. S. Browns string of forty-one yearlings, under the supervision of manager Max Samuelson, at the Pittsburg millionaires new breeding farm. The Erdenheim Stock Farm, long famous as the home of Leamington, is a thing of the past, its buildings having been destroyed by fire, and the last head of stock of any description has been sold at auction recently. Conspicuous among last Tuesdays exercises at Brighton Beach was the move of Alex Shields Prince of Melbourne. The old horse breezed seven furlongs in 1 :331 and acted kindly. John Watts, the once famous English jockey, is dead. Watts rode James R. Keenes Foxhall when the latter won the Cambridgeshire Stakes at Newmarket in 1881. Jennico, a good stake winner in England, and Dick Welles, so far the best of western two-year--olds, aire both out of mares by the redoubtable Hanover. The first declaration of the Latonia Derby and Oaks for 1903 is due today. The first payment is 5 for the Derby and 0 for the Oaks.
