LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Entries for the steeplechase and handicap to be run at Hawthorne on the opening day close Friday morning, and the weights will be announced Saturday. C. E. Durnell has purchased from S. C. Hildreth J. J. Marklein was a visitor at Harlem yesterday and stated that he would shortly ship his horses from Detroit to race on the local tracks. The Chicago Jockey Club, at their coming meeting, will only issue coupons to go with the old badges. the four-year-old horse Nitrate, the reported price being ,500. He also, purchased from C. Lind Lass of Langden for ,100. Jockey Mathews left last night for St. Louis, where he will ride at the coiring Kinloch Park meeting. He also shipped the horse Captain Gaines to race there. Guy H., the winner of the last race, was bid up and bought by S. LHommedieu for 00. Vic Britton will be here today from Saratoga, where he purchased, in connection with S. Bender, the three-year-old Jack Demund, which should prove a useful horse in the fall racing over the Chicago tracks. C. T. Boots, the owner of Argregor, returned yesterday from California, where he has been on a tour of inspection at his stock ranch. While there he shipped a number of horses to Sacramento, to be campaigned at the fairs.
