Skilful received a lucky start and clear sailing, followed the pacemaker closely and drew to the front a furlong out and just lasted out under a vigorous finish. Athel broke slowly, but otherwise was well placed; finished with a rush and ran a high-class race. Charles Elwood, away in front, was outran early, but closed up strongly iu the last quarter. Africander, also outrun early, made up much ground in the last half and finished fast. Sailmaker finished with a rush. Judith Campbell tired in the last furlong, after showing the way to the stretch and appearing a winner when straightened for the wire. Whitechapel got away badly and was messed about early. He is a slow beginner and was compelled to come on the outside to get clear sailing, ran a remarkable middle half and the effort tired him. Maxnic got away badly and was raced hopelessly wide on the turns. Grantsdale was practically left. Acefull was thrown against the fence at the half and was pulled up. Chuctanunda outclassed his field and is probably the horse of the year. He trailed within striking distance of the 1 pacemakers hard held, rushed to the front when called upon on the stretch turn and was oasing almost to a walk at the end. Knight of Rhodes is in rare form, forced a terrific pace for six furlongs, but was passed by the winner in the stretch and apparently about to retire, when he came unexpectedly with a brilliant burst of speed in the last hundred yards. Morningside finished fast and ran a high class, game race. Bonnibert, away badly, trailed the field under a pull and closed up from last place to a close fourth in a furloug and ran a phenomenal last quarter. Whiskey King was ridden a waiting race and was forced into the fence on the backstretch and Redfern was seriously hurt, in spite of which the colt put up a fine effort. Dublin broke very slowly and made up much ground and was going strongly at the end. Reina was a prominent contender for seven furlongs and is regaining her best form. Sister Jeanie went a fast six furlongs. Scratched 34289 Roxane, 116; 34267 Carbuncle, 113; 34290 Ben Howard, 93. Chuctanunda, show, 1 to 3. Knight of Rhodes, show, 4 to 1. Morningside, show, 8 to 5.
