CALIFORNIA JOCKEY CLUB STAKES. Racing in the middle west and over the eastern tracks is rapidly approaching the fall of the curtain on the campaign of 1902 and it will not be long until the winter racing at San Francisco and New Orleans will occupy the center of the stage. The California Jockey Club has recently been fortunate in securing the removal of the ban against racing at the handsomely appointed and picturesque Ingle-side track, in view of which its officials are confidently anticipating the greatest and most prosperous racing season since the sport was placed on up-to-date lines by Col. Harry Thornton and Mr. Thomas H. Williams. Elsewhere in this issue will be found the conditions of a great array of rich stakes proffered for decision a Ingleside, Oakland and Tanforan between tho 15th of November and the termination of racing at San Francisco next spring. The names of theBe events are familiar to owners, but there is this radical difference in their conditions, that, whereas heretofore they were all of guaranteed values, they are now, with the exception of tho 0,000 Burns Handicap, all on tho added money system, nono having less than ,500 added, tho endowments running from that sum up to the ,750 added to the first running of tho California Jockey Club Futurity. This change makes these stakes, as a complete list, by far tho most valuable ever offered for winter racing and accents the growing importance of racing on the coast. San Francisco is growing fast and is destined to be one of tho greatest of American cities. Its winter climate is in effect our summer climate and its population is more truly cosmopolitan than tliat of Chicago or New York. It is unsurpassed in pleasant accommodations and diversions for visitors. The three tracks controlled by the California Jockey Club are all of modern construction throughout and unsurpassed by any in the country. Altogether it is a remarkably attractive place to go a racing. Purses are the backbone of racing and the California Jockey Club announces that in the course of the coming meetings over its tracks 00 purses will be tho minimum, while for overnight handicaps and special condition races tho purses will range from C0 to ,000. All in all the clubs offerings are very liberal and a decided advance over the value? of past seasons. Owners are invited to study tho conditions of the Btakes offered. Entries close Monday, October 27, a date not far distant, and should bo sent to Secretary Percy W. Treat. 23 Kearney street. San Francisco, Cal. Locally Mr. James Hanby will supply owners with entry blanks and arraDge for transportation. Entry blanks can also bo obtained at this office.
