GOSSIP OF THIS TURF. Philip J. Dwyer, of tho Brooklyn Jockey Club, has claimed names for his two-year-olds of next season. He has a small band, but they are beautifully bred, and the familiar and popular "red, blue sash" should be carriod to victory much earlier this season than last, when Merry Acrobat broke the ice by winning the White Plains Handicap on the closing day of the Westchester autumn meeting. He has a yearling half sister to Merry Acrobat, which he considers another Major Daingerfield and a full brothor to the latter colt, which swept all before him in the three-year-old classes this yf ar. This colt was named Algernon Daingorfleld byhis breeder, Col. E. F. Clay, but Mr. Dwyer changed the name to Slierod. The names claimed are: Happy Hollow, b. c, by Handspring Anna. Harbor, b. c, by Handspring Astrid. Mountain Valley, b. c, by Esher Miss Annie. Sir Carter, b. or br. c, by Sir Dixon Belle Carter. Sherod, blk. c, by Handspring Mon Droit. Grand Commander, ch. c, by Wagner Middle-march. Future Bright, b. f, by Bon Brush PalianthuB. Dame President, b. f, by Prince of Monaco-Merry Thought. E. J. Arnold received a telegram several days ago informing him that P. Tomlinson, his Sari Francisco agent, had secured the services of jockey Burns for the remainder of the season and that Battiste will be sent to Now Orleans to pilot the horses at that track. The following broodmares were also purchased by his agent and sent to the stock farm to be bred to Gold Heels : Shimoga, full sister to Sain ; Callatine, dam of St. Callatine; Pow Wow, dam of Potente, and the racing mare Irene Lindsey. A charter has been granted by the Canadian government, authorising the Fort Erio Jockey Club, limited, to encourage the breeding of thoroughbred horses and to hold race meetings and "other lawfnl sports," the head offices being at t Fort Erie and capital 0,000. The incorporators are John Hood and Moses Shiro, both of Buffalo; William Gorman, M. P.; A, C. McDonnell and Joseph Battle, St. Cuthbert, which was badly injured at Nev Orleans some days ago, is rounding to, and will be seen out again in a couple of weeks. The gash in his breast has healed and is doing nicely. The old I horse has taken on flesh and picked up considarably since his let-up.
