JOCKEYS OF 1902. A very busy rider last year was jockey J. Ranch, who hails professionally from California, bnt is a Chicago bornlad. Ha leads all riders of last year in number of races won and in number of mounts. He does not lead in percentage, Buchanan being "first in that respect, with 23.71 ; Coburn second, with 23.68; Dominick third, with 23.59, while .Ranchs percentage is 23.41. A comparison of this record in the saddle last year with those of other leaders of recent years affords the following interesting exhibit: Year. Jockey. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unpl. Total. 1902 J. Ranch 276 205 181 507 1,179 1901 W. OConnor.. .253 221 192 E81 1,047 1900 Mitchell 195 140 139 380 854 1899 T. Burns 273 173 266 352 1,064 1898 T. Burns 277 213 149 334 973 1897 H. OConnor is to ride in France, Mitchell in Russia and Martin in England. C. Reiff has long since abandoned the saddle and "Sotp" Perkins is one of the band of outlaw riders at Newport. Followers of the turf will scan with interest the records oi such rising riders as Redfern, Helgesen, Mindec , Battiste, T. Dean, W. Waldo, C. Kelly, Robbins, Wonderly and Scully, and regret that young Lyne is going abroad. The jockeys who rode twenty or more winners in 1902 rank as follows : Jockey. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unpl. Total. J.
