GOSSIE OF THE TURF. Thoroughbreds that cost 5,000 were sacrificed by auction at San Francisco last Tuesday for a mere song. They belonged to P. Q. Lane, son of the millionaire mining man, who started a breeding farm in Nevada. He grew tired of the venture and shipped the entire lot to San Francisco, where they arrived in poor condition. They brought only ,300. Cimeter, daughter of the mareSabrina, that gave Water Color to the American turf, was secured by Charley Kerr for 5. Grinstead gave to tne turf such good performers as Yolante, Santa Ana, Santiago and Silver Cloud, yet Salonica, a Grinstead mare went to Barney Schreiber for 0. The auctioneer could only obtain 0 for a mare by Islington, sire of Kinley Mack. Tho young mare Midlothia, by Midlothian, out of a King Alfonso mare, brought only 15, while Playfere, by Midlothian, went for 75. These were fancy prices. Several mares in foal to Bright Phoebus, winner of the Realization, were knocked down for 0. Ed Corrigans good old mare Modesty, winner of the first American Derby, slipped a foal by Artillery recently.
