EASTERN STAKES Stake events to be decided at the spring meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at the new Jamaica track have closed. The most important fixture is the Excelsior Handicap for three-year-olds and upward, with 35,000 added, at a mile and a sixteenth, for which the weights will be announced on March 12. In view of the liberal nominations for other races of this kind, it is expected that the Excelsior will attract all of the crack handicap horses in training for the eastern campaign. The other races for horses of the older division are the Montague Stakes. ,000 added, at a mile and a sixteenth; the Kings County Handicap, 1,500 added, at six furlongs; the Newtown Stakes, ,000 added, at six furlongs, and the Corona Stakes, ,000 added, at a mile and seventy yards. The stakes for three-year-olds include the Fulton Stakes, ,500 added, at a mile and seventy yards; the .."Williamsburg Handicap, ,500 added, at six furlongs, and the Columbus Stakes, ,000 added, at six furlongs. For two-year-olds there are the Rosedale Stakes, ,500 added, at five furlongs; the Bushwick Stakes, ,500 added, at five furlongs; the Suffolk Stakes, ,000 added, at four and a half furlongs, and the Elmhurst Stakes, ,000 added, at five furlongs. The Bennings Spring Handicap have attracted forty-seven entries, which closed last week. The leading nominations are Namtor, Himself, Daly, Early Eve, Athelroy, Alan, Sergeant, Clonmell, Wealth, Syrlin, Demurrer, Circus, Animosity, Arden, April Shower, Toscan, Athlana, Merriment, Jerry, Red Damsel and others. The Spring Handicaps are run on the first and last days of the "Washington meeting. "While the horses nominated for this years events are not of the best quality, they are of much better class than those entered in previous years. The principal entries for the Carter Handicap, to be run on the opening day of the Aqueduct meeting, are Hermis, Francesco, Paul Clifford, Injunction, Palmist, Gimcrack, Tam oShanter, Namtor, Ethics, Himself, Daly, Illyria, Wax Candle, St. Daniel, Royal, Ordnung, John A. Scott, Janeway, Young Henry, Numeral, Potente, The Regent, Knight of Gold, Remorse, Wealth, April Shower, Monograph, Duelist, Silurian, Minotaur and others. Additional entries to the Metropolitan Handicap are Waswift, Sidney C. Love, Flocarline and Sambo, the total number received to date being sixty-five, with California yet to be heard from.
