Action was crowded back at the start and made up much ground. Lunga went well. Rose of Hilo quit badly in the last quarter. Bell Reed lacked his recent early speed, quit badly and ran a very bad race. Caronal ran well to the stretch. Scratched 37577Golden Cottage, 127; 37591 Alaria, 116; 37548 Rey Hooker, 118. Winner B. g, by Midlothian Talluda trained by W. L. Stanfleld. Went to post at 2:43. At post 6 minutes. Start bad. Won easily; second the same. David S., suddenly improved, indulged the pacemaker to the stretch, where he forged to the front without urging. Elfonse, crowded back at the start, closed a tremendous gap in the last six furlongs. Lone Fisherman made up fifteen lengths on the leaders and finished with a rush. El Piloto is consistent, was always prominent and held on well. Light Ball appeared like a contender when a furlong out, but tired at the end. He favors soft going. Bernota quit in the stretch and is strictly a mudlark. Matin Bell pulled up and was left, she only cantered the journey. Scratched 37566 Johnny McCartey. 106. Overweights El Piloto, 4 pounds; Bernota, 3; Straight Shot, 2. David S., show, 2 to 1. At post 3 minutes. Start bad. Won easily; second driving. Bearcatcher received an indifferent start and displayed phenomenal early speed, went through next to the rail and drew clear in a jiffy, retaining his advantage to the end, won going away, and is undoubtedly of high class. Toledo beat the barrier, but was quickly run into subjection by the winner and seemed to be bearing out on the sharp turn, came wide into the stretch losing ground, but stuck gamely to his work under a terrific driving finish and can do better. Rapid Water, away badly, closed a gap and appeared like a sure second when a sixteenth out, but Toledo wore him down fast at the end. Box Elder is improving. St. George Jr. broke slowly and was nearly left, is a good looker and has worked fast The entry show, out. Toledo, show, out. Rapid Water, show, out. Bearcatcher, singly, place, 1 to 2; show, out. At post 3 minutes. Start good. Won easily; second the same. Mike Rice made the running throughout, always well in hand, won cantering and was much the best. Dagmar was the only serious contender and ran in greatly improved form. Imperious stumbled over the last hurdle and threw his jockey, but was remounted and finished and may prove useful at this game. Duke of York ran out of the course. He was sent over the left wing of the first obstacle. Throw his race out. Overweights Discovery, 1 pound; Rainier, 1. Mike Rice, show, 1 to 4. He sustained a terrific pace unexpectedly well. Honiton fell hopelessly out of the race with an incapable jockey, but closed up a great gap and finished fast on her own courage and is steadily improving. Glendenning from a bad start went after the leader and appeared the only other serious contender in the first half, and although tired in the stretch drive stuck gamely to his task. Tower of Candles could never get up, was outrun from the start and ran a bad race. Sylvia Talbot ran a very fast first half and held on well. Overweights Sad Sam, 1 pound. Sad Sam, show, 1 to 2. Goldone was lucky and waited with next to the rail in behind the pacemakers and when called on quickly ran past them in the stretch, and was easily best. Oriania, also reserved for the first six furlongs, made good in the stretch run after going wide and being crowded out on the stretch turn and shows steady improvement. Urchin and Hipponax ran as a team throughout, made a strong pace and tired in the last quarter, but Urchin outstayed Hipponax after a long drive. Sir Hampton closed up a big gap after being virtually left at the post. Greyfeld ran poorly.
