NEWS FROM NASHVILLE. . Nashville, Tenn., March 2. Gen. W. H. Jackson, formerly the head of Belle Meade and one of the best known breeders in the United States, is in bad health lately. The former master of Belle Meade has retired from active business life, and has turned over all his affairs to his son, W. H. Jackson, Jr. General Jackson spends much of his time riding over his vast estate, -when the weather will permit. Albert Franklin, trainer for John Greener, I has engaged stable room at Memphis for his entire string. Franklin will go down to Memphis early and get defiant and Postmaster "Wright ready for the Derby and the first named for the Memphis Oaks. Postmaster Wright is a maiden, but defiant captured eight races in her two-year-old form, among the number four stakes, viz: The Belle Meade Stakes, the Avondale Stakes at Nashville, the Debutante Stakes at Louisville and the Debutante Stakes and Junior Champion Stakes at St. I.ouis..--Mr-cFranltlin .has ,about jtwelve horses in his string that he . will carry to Memphis. J. A. Drake has finally gotten names for his entire lot of two-year-olds. For the bay colt by Ben Strome Rose Leaf, he has claimed the name of Roseben. This is the only youngster that Drake has in the Futurity; Clyde, for the bay colt by Alwyd Miss Jumba; he claimed the name of The Elf for the brown filly by Scorpion Fience; Rudabeck, for the bay colt by Wagner Ginnie; Wavelow, for the bay colt by Oddfellow Wavelet; Turtle, for the bay colt by Scorpion Hygeia; Miss Oddity, for the bay filly by Oddfellow Lavina II.; Patrolman, for the bay colt by St George Patrona; Rosseric, for the chestnut colt by King Eric Lady Rossington; Ort Wells, for the chestnut colt by King Eric Teas Over. This is a full brother to the good colt Dick Welles. Van Esher, for the bay colt by Esher "Van-a-Clar; Matrona, for the bay filly by Esher Matron; Handsome Florry, for the chestnut fllly by Handsome Florry Myers; Foncasta, for the chestnut Ally by j Fonso Lucasta; Miss Veracity, for the bay filly by Scorpion Truth. There are fifteen two-year-olds in the Drake string ten colts and five fillies. William Hendrie, president of the Toronto Jockey Club, and one of the best known horsemen of Canada is in Nashville. He will spend the day at Cumberland Park looking over the horses stabled here. Sam Parmer, R. F. Meyers, Wm. Gerst, Albert Franklin and John Ferris will race at Memphis. A. B. Dade will again be engaged to do the starting at Cumberland Park this season. Dade held the same position last year. Flying Ship and Glen Water have recovered from their lameness and are being trained for the stake engagements at Nashville. Durnell and Herz have written to Nashville to keep alive their entry of McChesney in the Citizens Handicap, as they intend to start the horse over the fast track at Nashville. Good day and track they are going to hang up a record for a mile. McChesney will carry quite a. package on his journey 129 pounds. The Tennessee Breeders Association is figuring on offering a large futurity stake, the conditions to be made known soon. J. W. R.
