GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Edward Corrigan is having more bad luck at Churchill Downs. His crack mare Layia is seriously sick with lung fever, and there is small hope of her recovery. The mare was shipped to Louisville only a short time ago from New Orleans, where she was raced during the winter, and contracted lung fever en route to Churchill Downs. Layia is a chestnut mare, five years old, by Friars BalsamLady Paramount. S. Doggett has decided to quit riding for good and all. He has taken out a trainers license, and will bend his energies in that direction in the future. He and his brother, R. C. Doggett, own three horses now, which Sam will train the coming season. They have a two-year-old colt by Wagner, a two-year-old filly by Albert, and the three-year-old filly Sis Wagner, and may add to their stable later on. The biggest stables quartered at Cumberland Park are Wishard, thirty-two head; T. P. Hayes, thirty, and William Gerst, twenty-six. Other important lots in quality if nbt in numbers are those of Turney Bros., Clay Bros., E. S.Gardner, Gorman and Bauer, George Hendrix, W. W. Darden and Co., and S. W. Streett, who arrived a few days ago from New Orleans. Perry Belmont last Wednesday engaged the lightweight jockey Wallace Hicks to ride for him this year on the metropolitan circuit Hicks will enter immediately upon his service as Mr. Belmonts rider and remain in his service until December 1. A clause in this contract between Mr. Belmont and A. J. Plieque, Hicks guardian, stipulates that Mr. Belmont shall have first call on the boys services next year if this seasons work is satisfactory. The securing of a jockey was the object of Mr. Belmonts visit to Washington, and when that business was cou-cluded he left for New York. He will not visit Bennings track again this spring unless called over by particular business. Sidney J. Holloway, the well known gentleman rider who broke a collarbone while schooling a horse at Bennings last week, is rapidly recovering his health and strength. He expects to be able to ride again in ten days, and will have a mount in the Hunters Steeplechase Handicap, a week from next Saturday.
