GOSSIP OF THE TURF. I A Nashville exchange says: "The fact that fifteen American Derby, twenty Cumberland Derby, two Kentucky Derby and eight St. Louis Derby candidates, to say nothing of several eligibles to the Latonia, Canadian and Detroit Derbies, are stationed at Cumberland Park is naturally attracting the attention of many lovers of the thoroughbred horse to Nashville, where more blue-blooded flesh is quartered than at any other wintering point in the country. It is to this section that the public is looking for the winners of these blue ribbon events. Furthermore, the presence of Sav-able, John A. Drakes winter book favorite for the Washington Park classic here, causes many to turn their eyes in this direction. With but few exceptions the list includes the very cream of the western horses, and it is doubtful if there has ever been a case where so many high class racehorses were quartered at any one time. Then, too, the material is by far the most promising seen in recent years, taken as a whole. All told, there are twenty-four derby horses: American Derby, Bardolph, Benvolio, Chamblee, Fore and Aft, High Chancellor, J. Sidney Walker, Lou Reed, Monsieur Beaucaire, Orlando, Orly IL, Requisition, Sinner Simon, Savable and Von Rouse; Cumberland Derby, Benvolio, Harding, Flying Ship, J. Sidney Walker, Savable, High Chancellor, Frappe, Fore and Aft, Sinner Simon, Bardolph, Lem Reed, Outlaw, Dollie Gray, Requisition, Pira-teer, Orlando, Reservation, Stand Pat, Chamblee; Kentucky Derby, Bardolph and Benvolio; St. Louis Derby, Harding, Monsieur Beaucaire, Sioux Chief, Von Rouse, Benvolio, Eque, Outlaw and Pirateer." Bob Tucker, who trained Garry Hermann for Capt. S. S. Brown, now has a big string in training at Churchill Downs. They belong to the Pittsburg coal king, and Mr. Tucker will race them exclusively in the west this season, while Peter Wimmer will campaign the remainder of Captain Browns string on eastern tracks. The list in Tuckers charge is as follows: Caton, ch. g, 3, by Sir Dixon Catilina. East Indian, b. g, 3, by Hindoo Miss Moore. Indian Cherry, ch. c, 3, by Hindoo Cherry Blossom. Airtight, b. f, 3, by Lamplighter Sunbeam. Lampoon, ch. f, 3, by Lamplighter Mona. Rheta, br. f, 3, by Lamplighter Senorita. Pluck, blk. f, 3, by Pirate of Penzance Industry. Always Faithful, br. c, 2, by Ornament-Semper Vivent. Major F. A. Daingerfield, manager of Cas-tleton stud, considers that the famous racehorse Voter, winner in J. R. and F. P. Keenes colors of the Metropolitan Handicap and twenty-two other races and 9,707, has made the most remarkable .first season in the stud of any stallion he has ever had under his care. Last season he mated Voter to fourteen mares. Four of these have already foaled and the others are due within the next three weeks. What makes this fact all the more remarkable is that two of the mares bred to him are respectively 27 and 25 years old, they being Ella T., the dam of Tea Tray and Banquet, and Belle of Maywood, the dam of Tenny and Olympian, both of which have just had foals by Voter. The produce of these mares have won over 00,000 on the turf and their foals by the famous son of Friars Balsam will be regarded as among the most valuable ever dropped in this noted place. Major Daingerfield hopes to break a record with Voter in a breeding way and is confident of having this season at Castleton fourteen living foals by the great horse, a representative of every mare bred to him in 1902. Mr. L. V. Bell saw Hermis, Colonel Bill and Francesco work at Sheepshead Bay last Sunday. Trainer McCormick let the great trio down for three furlongs in 39 seconds. The move was one of the best yet made at Sheepshead. Just before they finished their move, Mr. Bell, armed with a kodak, took a snapshot of them. Mr. Bell was accompanied by two friends, who were interested spectators as the champions of the stable worked. Mr. Bell expressed satisfaction at the progress made by his handicap candidates, and stated that he was confident that Hermis will race up to expectations this year. The party visited the Bell stable after the horses were worked, and inspected the remainder of the string.
