GOSSIP OF THE TURF. John H. Carr will race the following horses this year: Your Grace, ch. h, 5, by Esher Excellenza. Courtmaid, ch. f, 3, by Prince Royal Sallie McAllister. Leipsic, ch. c, 3, by Hamburg Lucasta. My Evening Star, b. f, 2, by. Hopbine Star of the Evening. Kingsboro, br. c, 2, by Golden Crown-Benevolence. Auf Wiedersehen, ch. c, 2, by De Beauvoir Bon Voyag.e. Royalton, blk. g, 2, by Burlington Epinal. Prince of Elm, ch. c, 2, by The Kaiser Bal Masque. Honey Boy, b. g, 2, by Handsel Virgie Cook. Greenfield, br. c, 2, by Faverdale Bon Ami. It is the intention of Mr. Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., to give up flat racing entirely. Hereafter his interest will be devoted to steeplechasing and hurdle races exclusively. Mr. Hitchcock believes that with more people taking up that branch of the sport and giving it the attention it should have, crosscountry events will come into greater prominence and eventually reach the level that obtains in England on the continent. It is his intention to establish probably the best stable of jumping horses in the country, and there is little doubt that he will have much to do with the uplifting of the sport on the metropolitan tracks. That steeplechasers in England race longer and to a greater age than they do in this country, is attributed by Mr. Hitchcock, one of the foremost authorities on the subject in America, to the difference between the courses in the two countries. Mr. Hitchcock says the only, steeplechase course in this country that can be compared to those in England is that at Saratoga. The others, he declares, are faulty and at best not in coudition to permit a horse riding over them for any length of time. Daily America, Harry Stover has at last succeeded in perfecting all arrangements for his meeting at Petaluma. The gates will be opened oh May 4, and the meeting will continue for six days. There will be five or more races each day. Sam McGibben will act as secretary, and F. Mulholland as starter. Stover says the betting ring will be an open" one, and the program book will be issued in a few days. The track and building have been put in good shape for the meeting, which would have been longer, but for the fact that the Sacramento meeting begins on May 11.
