Ben Battle made a runaway race of it, opened up a big gap in the first half and was tiring at the end, but holding his own. Alma Girl closed up fast on the stretch turn and headed Ben Battle over the last jump, but the effort to make up ground was too much and she tired in the drive to the finish. Her race was a good one and she would probably have won had Finnegan not laid too far out in the early stages. J. A. Warner fenced well and displayed big improvement. Helen Paxton finished gamely under the whip and would have been third in another couple of strides. Collegian was pulled up in the stretch. Gibson Light was beaten when he went down at the last jump. At post 2 minutes. Start fair. Won easily; second the same. Contentious got off poorly as Redfern was not ready and was pulling up at the start. She made up ground gradually and closed up in the stretch under a hand ride, but was all out in the last hundred yards and had to be whipped home. Ninepin was a trifle short, is speedy and should do better when next out. Termagant was third through Haacks strong finish and only got up in the last stride. Oriza tired in the stretch, but fought out the finish gamely. Duncan, a likely looking youngster, ran a good race, held on well under pressure and would have been third with a stronger finish. Pleasant Memories ran poorly. The entry, show, 3 to 5. Termagant, show, 1 to 2. QQ- f THIRD RACE About 2 Miles. 00 added. 4-year-olds and upward. Q O JL J Allowances. Steeplechase. Went to post at 4:00. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won handily; second, driving. Charles OMalley fenced well and is speedy, but tired in the stretch from racing with Twilight and swerved over to the rail when a sixteenth from home just as Joe Leiter was coming through. The latter had to pull up and come around and was gaining at the end under a whipping finish. Foul was claimed and quickly allowed. Joe Leiter is a good performer through the field and was admirably handled. Twilight was probably best at the weights, but is an unruly horse and Mr. Knut had trouble in controlling him. Montrip fell twice, once at the first jump and again later on. Scratched 38110 Duke of Grassland, 151. Overweights Kalorama, 3 pounds. Joe Leiter, show, 1 to 2. Twilight, show, 7 to 5. It was the fastest race of the meeting and the first two had the race between them nearly all the way. The pace was fast, but Shrine wore Alan down in the stretch and was going away at the end under a hand ride. Alans race was a good one, but she swerved toward the inside when Haack hit her with the whip a furlong from home. Merriment was always outrun, but her performance was a fair one and she is worth remembering in slower company. Lorina displayed a burst of early speed and bolted on the turn. Scratched 381633Mezzo, 94; 38181 Show Girl, 91. No show betting on first three. QQOOI FIFTH RACE 7-8 Mile. 00 added. 3-year-olds and upward. Maidens. OOiJZSl Allowances. Drop oRye got off well in motion and was carefully placed throughout. He had to be hustled to head Catch Me and was hard ridden at the end to stall off Benefit. The latter received a poor start and made up a big gap, finished with a rush and would have won with an even break. Michaelmas stood a long stretch drive gamely. John Nevin is consistent and would have been third with a strong finish. Lady Welbeck finished fast and is worth remembering in this company. Catch Me was made too much use of and tired from forcing the pace. Scratched 381813Alhambra, 95; 38182 Cherry Song, 95. Overweights John Nevin, 4 pounds; Lady Welbeck, 3. Drop oRye, show, 4 to 5. Pageant began quickly and had the race seemingly in hand all the way, but tired in the final furlong and was doing his best at the end to stall off" Merry Maker. Redfern waited too long with the latter and was carried toward the inside rail when a furlong from home as Pageant bore in. He was going fast at the time, but tired in the stretch run. Benckart came fast on the stretch turn and appeared the winner in the stretch only to weaken in the final drive. Provost stood a long hard drive. His race was a good one and he is worth remembering. Ithan was a sharp contender for six furlongs and was probably short. Scratched 38093 McWilliams, 113. Overweights Ithan, 3 pounds. Pageant, show, 1 to 2. Merry Maker, show, 1 to 2.
