Winner Ch. f, by Handspring Merry Dance "trained by A. Gates. Went to post at 3:25. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won easily; second the same. Merriment displayed sudden improvement with a change of riders. At home in the going she had to be hustled to catch Honolulu, but had plenty to spare at the end. April Shower ran a good race considering he does not run extra well in mud, made up a lot of ground and made a wide stretch turn finishing next to the outside rail. He pulled up lame. Honolulu was made too much use of and tired in the stretch, but hung on gamely. Mrs. Frank Foster closed up fast on the stretch turn, but tired in the final drive and probably needs a let up. Daly floundered in the going and could not extend himself freely. Tugai Bey tired early and was eased up at the end. Scratched 38165 Ahumada, 112; 382012Glennevis, 108; 38220 Shrine, 104; 37610 Par Excellence, 104; 38222Pageant, 103; 38132Duke of Kendal, 100. Merriment, show, evens. April Shower, show, 6 to 5. Eleata is a consistent and game filly, displayed speed, wore Echinate down in the stretch and was going away at the end under a hand ride. Transmigration came fast in the stretch, but tired in the last furlong. Reverberate began slowly, ran on the outside all the way and made up ground, could not get up. Echinate, off well in motion, was short. Scratched 38037 Boy Blue, 99; 38164 Magic Flute, 99. Eleata, show, out. Transmigration, show, out. The entry, show, out. Nuptial raced Lucky Day into submission in the first five furlongs and had enough left to stall off Little Boy at the end. The latter was hard ridden all the way, but tired and could not get up at the end. Lucky Day showed earily speed, but found the route too far. Knight of the Garter and Wheeler B. were practically left at the post. The former made up a lot of ground under a weak ride and would no doubt have won with an even start. Mystic Belle ran a fair race for six furlongs. Scratched 382413Blue Victor, 106; 382402Lord Advocate, 106; 381653Embarrassment, 101; S8199 Cloche dOr, 95. Pearl Diver was a shade better than the others and had to be to win. She received a poor start, but came with a rush in the stretch, caught Walbrook and was all out and doing her best at the end. Walbrook ran a good race and would probably have won with a stronger rider up. Michaelmas tired in the final furlong. Allen Ferres ran well for nearly six furlongs. Catch Me was given a poor break and taken up too fast in the first half. Scratched 38221 Loravale, 97. Overweights Michaelmas, 4 pounds; Allen Ferres, 4. Pearl Diver, show, out. Coleman was the best at the weights and showed the most speed, but tired when a furlong from home and Minder took no chances, riding him out. Black Dick held on gamely under punishment. It was a poor race for Benckart. He closed up some ground in the stretch, but tired in the final drive. Lord Advocate ran poorly. Spring-brook had no chance with a bad start. Scratched 38240 Ithan, 84. Overweights Lord Advocate, 4 pounds. H. L. -Coleman, show, 2 to 5. Black Dick, show, evens. Benckart, show, out. Spring-brook, show, 2 to 5.
