The Carmelite Is a grand looking colt and half brother to the trio of California crack-erjacks of a decade ago — Rinfax, Nomad and Picton. He led unextended throughout and was the medium of a tremendous coup by his owner, who was formerly a young business man in Chicago. St. Sever, away last, closed a big gap and is greatly improved over his California form. Rene was a safe third from start to finish. Petit Bleu, badly ridden, away slowly, made up ground fast in the last three furlongs. Blue and Orange ran indifferently. Royal Pirate had but scant chance with an incompetent rider, nevertheless he improved his position steadily after the first furlong. Sadducee was lame going to the post. True Blue retired early. Winner — B. c, by Hamburg — Berriedale trained by J. W. Rogers. Went to post at 3:00. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won driving; second easily. Inflexible today raced in accordance with his private work and should continue to improve. Running on the extreme outside he worked steadily into a contending position by the time the level stretch was reached and from there on displayed rare speed and courage and wore Collector Jessup down at the end. The latter drew clear of his field in the last sixteenth and was apparently assured of victory, but Jenkins was caught napping and the colts defeat was due to a weak finish. Masedo made the running to the top of the level track where he tired, yet stuck to his work in game fashion. Tim Sullivan runs honestly and consistently, but was outclassed. Jocund got away poorly and was generally messed about. Stre-phon, a grand looker, made a promising debut and is probably a high-class colt that ran green in his maiden effort. Rockaway is a Californian that will be heard from. He was thought to be the best of the Burns and Waterhouse two-year-olds. Bass is another California colt of high degree which was probably out for an airing. Scratched— 38583 Bath Beach, 113; Stalwart, 108; Donnelly, 108; 39002 Latheron. 108: 3S975 Montpelier, 108; 39001 Pirouette, 105. Overweights — Mohican, 2 pounds. Inflexible, show, 4 to 5. Winner — Ch. g, by Belvidere — Livonia trained by E. Frakes. Went to post at 3:30. At post 3 minutes. Start straggling. Won driving; second easily. Brigand, away last, quickly took advantage of the slow early pace and raced Into the lead next to the rail and never relinquished it, displaying rare gameness in a long and terrific stretch struggle in stalling off the redoubtable Whitney crack Reliable. The latter was choked in the first half in an effort to place him and went very wide on the turns, but finished fast and was wearing the winner down at the end. Sun Gold will probably beat good ones later on. He still races high and big, but is steadily improving and came along with a rush at the end. Red Knight, away slowly, trailed the field and put up a fast stretch run. Duke of Kendal went unexpectedly well. Rigodon was probably unequal to the weight concession and also indicated lack of condition. Flying Jib may have suffered from the excessive heat. He quit early. Corrected weights — Flying Jib, 107. Brigand, show, 4 to 5. Sun Gold, show, 7 to 5. Flying Jib, show, out. •QA7 FOURTH RACE — Last 7-8. Withers Mile. ,000 added. 3 -year-olds anT f_J *JJ I fj upward. Maidens. Allowances. Start straggling. Won easily; second the same. Stolen Moments probably outclassed the field and ran as if she did. Away badly and compelled to race around the big field, she steudily improved her position and after making an almost hopelessly wide stretch turn she finished out the last furlong with a phenomenal burst of speed and won easing up. Kesmer, away in his stride, had clear sailing from the start, flashed into the lead next to the rail when straightened for home, taking a long lead well in hand, but succumbed finally to the winners brilliant rush at the end. Wyefield made the running for nearly six furlongs and held on gamely and is a much improved colt. Ink failed to run up to expectations and may be overdone. Sentinel has worked fast trials and sustained a superior burst of speed well for six furlongs before he retired. Tristesse closed a gap from a bad start. Scratched— 39072 The Carmelite, 104. Torchlight was restrained in a contending position to the stretch, where she easily moved away from the others and won easing up. Past held the lead to the stretch, setting a slow pace, but was unequal to withstand the winners challenge. Bar Le Due ran in improved form. Lord Advocate finished gamely. Luke Ward challenged for the lead on the turn, captured it, and under a powerful ride maintained it to the end. The Musketeer showed his usual great speed, but his big impost proved too much for him at the end of a long hard drive. St. Daniel ran to his best form and finished resolutely. Knight of Harlem showed to advantage under his light impost. Futurita made up much ground and was a sharp contender in a brilliant finish. Tim D. Jr. showed early speed.
