Start good. Won easily; second the same. Stevedore showed fine speed throughout, decisively outraced his field and is a remarkably improved horse. New York, which had been reserved to the stretch, closed up with unexpected pertinacity at the end. Futuritas usual fast move on the stretch turn failed tand materialize and she was hard put to outstay Stamping Ground in a long driving finish for third place. The latter has trained on evidently into a good three-year-old and while not keyed up for such a bruising race, she showed such pronounced improvement as to rank her with the best of the fillies. Golden Drop practically forced the pace throughout and stood a Jong and trying drive through the last furlong. , Cyprienne was crowded early and under the whip almost throughout, running a remarkably game race and was going fastest of all at the end. Destiny, away badly, steadily improved her position closing a big gap and finishing like a streak when she struck the level stretch. Luminosity was a prominent contender when a sixteenth out, but was tiring and easing up in the lastf few strides. Heatherdown, badly handled and swerving, finished close up and was not driven out. Vagary came from a long way back In the last furlong. Bass, a grand looker, had a poor chance with an incompetent rider, was nearly left and closed a tremendous gap and should easily beat this kind later on. Overweights — Pirouette, 3 pounds; Sals, 2. Won handily; second driving. .Dovecote practically forced the pace from start to finish and at the end won going away in resolute fashion and is probably the best filly thus far shown. Contentious, running on the outside, closed with a tremendous rush at the end. Tepee came through next to the rail • when the field struck the level stretch and momentarily appeared like winning, stood a long and terrific drive and must be above the common or her looks belie her. Julia M was always in the front rank and fighting out the issue very gamely. M. Theo and Ponapa finished close up and both are promising. The Lady Rohesia arid Ishlana were easing up at the end. Ishlana quit after making a strong bid when a furlong out. Dovecote, show, 2 to 5. Contentious, show, evens. Tepee, show, 8 to 5. Ingold is steadily growing in favor as a racehorse of good class, was a prominent contender and, after losing ground through a wide turn, he was going great guns at the end. Brigand was badly mishandled from start to finish, got away badly and turned hopelessly wide into the stretch, where Haack let go of his head, and the colt swerved across the track with such force that he ran into the fence. In spite of this he was a close up fourth. Clarion went a fast six furlongs. Akela failed to stay. Gay Boy was always outrun and never dangerous. Past was lucky and had clear sailing, moved up fast on the stretch turn, but went wide and relinquished the lead to Bar Le Due, which he finally wore down and beat on the post. Bar Le Due flashed into the lead next to the rail when straightened for home and stood a long drive and might have won but for his riders whipping tactics. Glennevis sustained his speed unexepectedly well, but is always best in mud. Nic Longworth, a very slow beginner, fell hopelessly out of contention, closing an almost incredible gap in the last quarter. Carroll D. failed to stay after a good six furlongs and is best in mud. Surmise patiently trailed his field, which had been engaged in a bitter struggle for supremacy for the first seven furlongs and all were done to a turn when Surmise came along with plenty in reserve and won going away fast. Blues made the running and was forced along at a fast pace up the trying hill by Red Knight and was drawing away when he was again challenged and repeatedly bumped by Injunction and compelled to resign his lead. He recovered gamely and turning the tables on Injunction, he finished out the last sixteenth very fast but too late to get up. Injunction received an over-anxious and ill-judged ride, was sent along from the start and when beginning the long stretch run moved up into the lead like a flash and seemed like winning a furlong out, but was tiring very badly from there on. Dr. Saylor got away slowly and went wide, but made up his ground in the furlong up hill and ran a fast and game race. Red Knight successfully performed his evident mission of racing the favorite up the hill in an effort to tire him out and then retired. Throw out this race as to both.
