Lord Melbourne was much the best, took kindly to the dead going and tiptoed the field all the way. Prodigal Son made up ground fast in the last quarter and finished going fast. High Chancellor was crowded out of position when the barrier went up losing ground and tired fast in the last quarter. Jackfull ran well for six furlongs. The race should do him much good. Skilful, off well in his stride, displayed keen speed throughout and outclassed the field. Beau Ormonde ran to his best form and was the best of the others. Lucien Appleby came with a rush at the end, nipping St. Minor on the post for third place. The latter showed scant speed and appeared to be unable to extend himself freely in the dead going. He tired badly in the last eighth. Stem Winder showed early speed and ran a good race considering that he runs to his best form on a fast track. Scratched— 39162 Toah, 117; 38628 Savable, 105. Rolling Boer was persevered with all through the last quarter, but could not close up on the winner. John McGurk tired rapidly in the last quarter. He ran his race and had no mishaps. Katie Powers made up much ground in the last eighth and wore down Sweetie in the closing strides for third place. The latter tired fast when a furlong out and was well spent passing the wire.
