I LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. J. B. Respess arrived Sunday at Harlem from Latonia with eighteen horses, including Dick Welles, Belles Commoner, Six Shooter, Colonnade, Last Knight and Gallagher. In the same consignment came P. J. Gormans Jack Rattlin, which will be handled by Respess during the current meeting. The remainder of the Gorman string, which includes the American Derby candidates Bar-dolph and Sinner Simon, were left at Latonia to enjoy a rest before being shipped to Chicago to be raced at Washington Park. Horsemen who have had a chance to observe Dick Welles closely are enthusiastic over his appearance and are positive in their declaration that the Respess candidate will be returned the winner of the American Derby. J. F Schorr arrived yesterday from Latonia with his horses Esherin, the Latonia Oaks winner, Joe Frey, Gold Bell, Benson-hurst ■ and two two-year-olds. Evea G., which started in the fourth race ■ yesterday, appeared very sore while in the • paddock, and displayed symptoms of lameness - while on her way to the post. Jockey Gray stated that jockey J. Booker • was responsible for the mishap to McChes-ney - on the first turn. The latter had the I mount on Jackfull and when about to make the first turn he deliberately cut off Evea i G., which in turn collided with McChesney r causing him to stumble and go to his knees. . Allowing that he has improved over his two-year-old form, there is no horse today that can give him twenty pounds actual weight and a beating. Many of those who had advanced the above argument before the race, frankly admitted afterward that but for the mishap to McChesney on the ;first turn, he would have easily beaten Sav- lable. |f Floyd JC. was claimed by both J.
