Shotgun practically forced the pace throughout while occupying the inside position, where the going was deep. After momentarily relinquishing his lead as he turned into the stretch he finished out the last furlong with remarkable gameness and is evidently a high-class colt. John A. Scott broke flatfooted, but is phenomenally quick on his feet and he early raced into a slight lead but lost ground through a wider stretch turn, closing up like a cyclone at the end. Ulyria was lucky throughout, but outrun to the stretch where he turned next to the rail and finished with a rush. Sir Voorhies tired slightly in the final H strides after having followed the pacemaker closely from the start. Hurstbourne, away poorly after causing a delay at the post, finally went through next to the rail in the worst going and in the stretch appeared like winning, tiring only in the last fifty yards. He was much the best and is a crackerjack this year. Ink was running well at the finish. Athel got away very badly and was worse ridden. Haack sat still on him throughout. Scratched— 39538 Astarita, 120. Shotgun, show, 5 to 1. John A. Scott, show, 2 to 1. Ulyria, show, 5 to 1. Winner— B. c, by Longstreet — Chartreuse trained by A. Shields. Went to post at 3:00. At post 1 minute. Start good. Won driving; second the same. Hunter Raine suddenly stole away from the waiting favorite on the far turn and, when straightened out for home with a good lead, he easily stalled off Douro, which came again at the end. The latter, to whom no light boy could do justice, showed remarkable improvement, was always next to the rail in the deep going and ran a particularly game race. His Eminence was the victim of an ill-judged ride. Waiting tactics and being placed for the first six furlongs exhausted him and he can do much better when rightly handled. Colonsay displayed unexpected stamina and made a surprisingly good showing. The slow early pace placed Surmise at a great disadvantage and he was outsprinted in the last quarter. Hopeful Miss simply cantered for the journey holding a safe lead throughout and was much the best. Listaway ran in suddenly improved form and finished out a gamely contested -last quarter. Sweet Tone held a lucky position throughout and finished very fast on her own courage. Bruceville, after being driven to the stretch, swerved over into the heavy going and tired badly in the last furlong. Pleasant Memories kept improving her position in the last half. Excentral got away badly and closed a gap. Celebrant and Any Day both ■ failed to stay. Scratched— 39597 Bob Murphy, 102; 39295 Sailor Knot, 97. Winner — Br. f, by Kingston — Cerito trained by J. Rowe. Went to post at 3:55. At post 1 minute. Start good. Won in a canter; second easily. Stolen Moments got away badly and was pulling up in behind the field for the first furlong, moved up when with clear sailing on the backstretch and could not be restrained back to her field, coming away without much effort in the last three furlongs, far outclassed her field. Gloriosa beat the barrier, but was taken back at once and Burns played a waiting game with surprising results, the Handspring filly making good with a rush at the end. Love Note made the early running on sufferance and failed to stay landing a lucky third. Gravina fell to her knees in the first sixteenth and -was practically removed as a contender. She could not have been worse than second. Mary Street ran a bad race and has evidently not trained on from her good two-year-old form. Gloriosa, show, 8 to 5. Love Note, show, 3 to 5. Agnes D. held a good position on the outside in the best going and suddenly raced into a long and winning lead on the stretch turn and just lasted long enough to get home by a narrow margin. The fast coming but dilatory St. Sever lost his chance at the critical moment on the turn and was probably best. Tioga made the running for a mile and set a fast clip, which she sustained unexpectedly well throughout. Hist closed up well at the end. Won easily; second driving. ■ Olaf beat the barrier and indulged the pacemaker for a quarter when he drew into the lead 1 and won going away at every stride. Harbor is a slow beginner and was in close quarters 5 next to the rail to the stretch, where he made up ground rapidly. Dutiful finished fast - after making up considerable ground from an indifferent start. Bob Murphy held on better " today although tiring badly in the stretch and is probably best in sloppy going. Sandhurst : looks and ran like a coming crackerjack. Great Eastern is a bad actor and ran very green, ■ but has shown fast work in private. Responsive is a beautiful filly with a taking way of going and will be heard from. Olaf, show, out. Harbor, show, 1 to 2. Dutiful, show, 3 to 1.
