Van Ness won as if he outclassed his field, led unextended throughout and is in rare form. Petra II. finished, with a rush. Blue Banner is much improved and may develop into above the average, held a prominent position from the start and was going rcsolutokMjte finish. Invasion -unexpectedly failed to stay after- moving up fast as the field str.K , for home. Rostand, a slow beginner, closed a tremendous gap. Brixton movedV his field when the pace was fastest on the far turn, tiring in the stretch and evBfy favors mud. Morokanta was crowded back and out of it directly after the start and .Toade up a lot of ground after. Flywheel was beaten off. Kentucky Rose followed the -sunner clear into the stretch and finished pulling up. Proper trailed in behind the three leaders, which were racing head and head for six furlongs and, moving up after being straightened away for home, finished out the last furlong with a rare burst of speed and is evidently a crack three-year-old. River Pirate practically forced the pace to the stretch turn, where he found himself tightly pinned in between two, allowing Himself to steal away at a critical moment. With clear sailing he Anally closed up with a rush, only to be in turn passed by the winner in the last sixteenth. Himself, on the inside and showing brilliant speed, suddenly drew into a clear lead when turning into the stretch and appeared like a sure winner, but unexpectedly tired. Shorthose got away slowly and, under Haacks weak efforts, was unable to keep within striking distance in the first six furlongs, but was making up ground in the stretch. He pulled up lame after the race and ran in bar plates, has been on the ailing list and is only partially recovered. Carbuncle has probably developed into a confirmed sulker or else has trained off. Dr. Saylor and Tugai Bey both failed to stay. Scratched— 39450DublIn, 126; 35904 Eugenia Burch, 106; 39697 Bar Le Due, 89. Overweights — Dr. Saylor, 4 pounds. Proper, show, 7 to 10. Winner— Ch. c, by Bassetlaw — Victoria Cross trained by A. L. Aste. Went to post at 3:25. At post. 1 minute. Start fair. Won easily; second the same. Valour is a fast colt and a stayer. To a bad sendoff, he trailed the field to the half, where he was shut off in an attempt to go through next to the rail and was again similarly treated on the stretch turn, but gamely overcoming interference, he closed up like a cyclone, winning decisively at the end. Reveille, under skillful handling, ran in much improved form and kept coming very gamely at the finish. Mohave, after turning wide, moved up with a rush in the last furlong. Vagary again failed to stay after racing In front for five furlongs. Race King forced the pace and was unable to last. He is on the small side and probably a non-stayer. Olaf retired early and ran a particularly bad race. Scratched— 39146 The Lady Rohesia, 117; 39743 Tomcod, 110. Corrected weights — Olaf, 112. Valour, show, 3 to 5. Reveille, show, 1 to 2. Won easily; second the same. Duke of Kendal beat the barrier, held a prominent position in the field until the far turn, where he commenced to draw away and gamely held his own to the end. He is a pretty good colt, especially on a muddy or difficult track. Highlander, nearly left and badly messed about, trailed his field for seven furlongs, suddenly closing up next to the rail like a cyclone and was probably best. Zoroaster had no mishaps, kept his position from a good start for him and finished out fast and gamely, but was not equal to conceding the weight to the first two. Tribes Hill went well throughout, running solely on his own courage. Courtenay went a good six furlongs and is a changed horse this year, giving evidence of plenty of early speed, but wanting in stamina. Ethics had no chance at the start and the track conditions were dead against him. Scratched— 39721 Silurian, 98. Overweights — Duke of Kendal, 1 pound; Highlander, 1. Duke of Kendal, show, evens. Winner— B. c, by Grey Friars — Little Pearl trained by G. White. Went to post at 4:25. At post 3 minutes. Start good. Won handily; second the same. Bob Murphy, steadily improving and probably benefited by the shower just before the race, which left the track wet, but not sloppy, received a lucky start and followed Julia M. closely, finally wore her down in the last sixteenth in handy fashion and won going away The latter quickly raced into the lead and set a clinking pace, but succumbed to the winner at the end. Pompano headed a close bunch of the others to the stretch, where he came away fast and finished a strong third. Inquisitive Girl again found the going too wet and failed to sustain her speed. She is a fine filly, but averse to muddy footing and sure to redeem herself under different conditions. Sir Walt suffered some at the start, running a steady race throughout. Luminosity had no chance at the start and less with the bad jockey on her back. Faulconbridge, after waiting in behind the favorite for five furlongs, suddenly ran past him as if he were anchored and, cantering into the lead on the turn, finished unexpended and easing up. Spring Silk, away none too well, made up ground slowly on the backstretch, but closed a tremendous gap in the last quarter and finished like a cyclone. Aminte displayed superior speed for seven furlongs, tiring only at the very end. Nic Longworth is a rater pure and simple and will give a good account of himself over a distance of ground. St. Jude broke fast and led under a pull for six furlongs, when he suddenl quit. Polite had no chance with his incapable rider and can do better and has done some Notably good work in private. Williamstead was nearly left. Blue Jay performed poorly. Scratched— 396463Love Note, 107. Corrected weights— Beau Gray. 109. , SSSSStSTspring Silk, show, evens.
