From a lucky start he- forced such a pace that a fast horse like King Pepper could not keep up, coming away in the stretch with ease-King Pepper ran an unexpectedly game race after breaking fiatfooted and, being early outrun, as he was by the winner. Astarita got away poorly and finished sprawling and bespattered with mud. Cinquevalli could not keep up with this field in the first half, but finished well. John A. Thorneycroft stamped himself above the ordinary, practically forced the pace throughout and on the far turn came away from a good class horse like Highlander as if he were anchored, but was driving hard at the end to beat the latter. -Highlander was best, but was caught napping and finished in the wake of the winners mud and was badly ridden. Haack was unable to pull him out from in behind Thorneycroft in the last furlong. Kin-graine got away poorly and Lewis failed to fc.ct promptly on the first turn. He closed up fast when too late. Royal Pirate was outclassed, but did his best and was in winning form. St. Sever has evidently trained off. Inflexible outclassed his field, held a prominent position to the stretch, where he drew out and stood a long and game stretch drive and won going away. Monsoon, a superior filly in the going, developed great early speed today and held on with splendid pertinacity at the end. Yellow Hammer closed up with a rush at the end. White Plume finished close up and was a sharp contender throughout. Gallant had no mishaps, ran in the first flight for a half mile, but failed to respond in the final drive. River Pirate followed the favorite closely to the stretch, where he drew to the front, apparently winning easily, but was unexpectedly driving at the end to beat Yardarm. The latter trailed for nearly six furlongs, closing up like a cyclone at the end. Mackey Dwyer, outrun early, was running faster than the field in the last furlong and at the weights ran a great race. Charles Elwood raced into the lead under a pull for five furlongs and then quit very badly and ran an unaccountably bad race. Ulyria was outclassed. Flara quickly drew into the lead and, easily showing the most speed throughout, came away like a shot at the end. Bar Le Due got away well enough and moved up fast on the far turn, but tired at the end. Scoffer showed plenty of speed and had clear sailing throughout. Tioga was a prominent contender for the first five furlongs, after which she fell rapidly out of it. The others were hopelessly strung out, the race being a procession from the start. Won easily; second the same, pi Dr. Saylor, running in a good position and next to the rail, made the most of a ridicu-ii lously slow early pace and, being called on when straightened for home, came away like g a shot. Colonsay, on which Redfern rode an over-confident and badly-judged ride in 1 spite of the slow pace, made no move until on the stretch turn, where he was finally compelled to run on the outside of four horses and could never close up the long and winning lead stolen by the winner on the turn. His Eminence trailed under a choking pull and was outsprinted in the homestretch. Articulate has apparently developed into a confirmed sulker. When leading comfortably he fell away suddenly and, although he finished with plenty of speed left, he really had no chance with his light rider.
