Winner — Ch. f, by Farandole — Giralda trained by C. Hughes. Went to post at 3:05. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won driving; second the same. Pirouette, lucky at the start and on the outside, forced the pace throughout in the best going, stood a long stretch drive well and just got home in time. Raglan got away poorly and worked a rough journey and, coming from a long way back in the stretch, she finished with a tremendous rush and must have been much the best. Wild Thistle worked into. *• contention on the stretch turn and closed up gamely on the inside in deep going. Short, Cake was a prominent contender throughout and evidently favored by the going. Responsive is a good looker, got away badly and made up a lot of ground on her own courage. Step Aside was going well at the end. Ruth Parrish was used up early in trying to get up, after getting off in the rear. Glad Smiles tired in the stretch run and was eased up. Armenia and Gamestress both ran green and will be heard from later. Scratched— 39621 M. Winner — Ch. c, by Meddler— Mountain Range trained by J. W. Rogers. Went to post at 3:30. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won easily; second the same. Payne was given a skillful and patient ride, easily passed the tiring pacemaker when sent along the stretch turn, coming away at the end with plenty in reserve. Coruscate forced the pace for six furlongs and a fumbling and inadequate whipping finish lost her several lengths, in addition to swerving at the end into deep mire next to the rail. Stamping Ground is in great form and went a good six furlongs, but tired the last quarter and was evidently at a great disadvantage on the track. Sir Voorhies tired at the end of six and a half furlongs and is probably a non-stayer. Irascible got away badly, moved up on the far turn with an amazing burst of speed and fell away again, indicating lack of condition. Monte Carlo still shows to be far short of being fit. Blue Jay steadily improved his position from a poor start and, coming through on the inside at the end, finished with a rush, running in remarkably improved form. Sentinel took the lead on the stretch and looked like a sure winner, but tired. Prince Ching went very wide on the turns and appeared to be a good horse badly ridden. Royal Pirate got away flat-footed and quickly fell out of it, but finished fast, bespattered with mud and his jockey all at sea. Bassanio closed a gap in the last half. Anklet led, for nearly five furlongs and held on well. Scratched— 34823 Dr. Bissell, 107; 39075 Twin Rose, 103; 39595 Salvatella, 101; 39050 Rag-lets, 101; 36028 Cloverland, 101; 35004 Helen C. Blues, always a wonder in the stiff going that prevailed, got away in his stride and rating along in front at a remarkably fast pace soon had his field driving to keep up. He easily held his advantage to the finish and ran in his best form. Herbert put up a game but hopeless stern chase. Moon Daisy ran an astonishingly good race and had the best of Hunter Raine from start to finish. The latter went to driving early, but could never pass Moon Daisy, much less get within striking distance of the first two, and his showing today was distinctively bad, due either to the going or his having trained off. Walter Cleary was always the principal contender and but for bearing out on £he turns would have been closer up. Tankard blundered badly while going the first time around, after which he could not get fully into his stride. Semper Ira lost considerable ground before he got down to the good work he afterward displayed through the field and closed up a-lot of ground at the end, after trailing his*field for over half the journey* Judge Phillips made many mistakes and appeared to lack speed today.- Scratched— 24140 Prince Midas, 140; Rose of Sharon, 140; 38880 Betsy Ross, 130. Florham Queen again found the track conditions, soggy and slow, particularly to her liking and well ridden led her field from start to finish, but barely won. Setauket, away badly and poorly handled, closed a big early gap, but went wide on the stretch turn losing much ground and was wearing the winner down at the end. Oclawaha was a prominent contender throughout and going fast at the end. Carroll D. was badly ridden. Petra II. tired after going a fast six furlongs. W. R. Condon was never dangerous. Young Henry quit after* going a good three-quarters and can do much better. Thorneycroft fell away after a weak bluff on the far turn. Scratched— 333873Roehampton, 112; 39866 Lowly, 86.
