He cut across his field at the start and led throughout, ran out when turning into the stretch, but went on gamely at the end and was probably lucky to beat Floral King. The latter came out of the ruck in the stretch and closed up like a cyclone, although swerving precipitately to the inner rail. Trouville closed a tremendous gap from a bad start and finished fast. Mohave moved up with a rush when straightened for home and evidently favors a distance. Short Cake was crowded on the turn and came again at the finish. Sir Walt swerved all over the course and finished in the deep going. Tommy Rot, vastly improved, dropped from the clouds at the end. Albertola probably favors mud strictly. Won easing up; second driving. Shot Gun far outclassed his field, ran to the front early and won all the way with supreme ease, was never out of a canter and is in the first flight of sprinters. Royal Summons was sent along right-from the start, but was only able to pass Frank Keane on the stretch turn, where he apparently held a safe lead for second place, but just got home by a head, tiring badly at the end and swerving into the deep going. Duelist moved up fast on the turn arid finished with a rush in the stretch and ran a surprising race at the weights. Dean Swift was handicapped by the cuppy going and unable to keep up in, the first half, but came through on the inside and was making up ground very fast at the finish. Orloff fell away when beginning the last quarter and then came again In the final drive. Frank Keane raced in close attendance on the winner for three furlongs. Highlander, under a capable pilot, finally showed his true form and at the weights ran the best race he has shown this season. He was crowded directly after the start and was repeatedly forced to pull up and, working his way through in the deep going next to the rail throughout, he drew clear of his field in the last furlong and won going away. Arden consistently ran to his best form and closed up with a rush after being straightened for home. Bob Hilliard had been outrun and did not appear to have much chance, even when beginning the last quarter, but in the- last furlong he was running past horses. Agnes D. moved up fast on the outside while rounding the far turn, only to succumb in the stretch run and she may have been short. Akela forced the pace for nearly seven furlongs and held on gamely to the finish. Spring Silk, a more than useful colt, but inadequately handled, was a prominent contender throughout and was crowded over to the fence on the stretch turn and, tiring somewhat, his diminutive rider was unable to help him for a final effort. Tribes Hill unexpectedly failed to stay and his rider was of no assistance to him at the end. * Scratched— 39769 Ethics, 10S; 39891Flara, 103; 39984 Locket, 103; 39936 Rostand 96 Overweights — Arden, 2 pounds; Bob Hilliard, 1; Akela, 1. * Highlander, show, 1 to 3.. Goldsmith raced into close quarters early and suffered considerable interference before he got clear sailing on the far turn, but Redfern rode him a very confident looking race and patiently bided his time and when ready to move, which he did when beginning the last quarter, the colt quickly ran into the lead and finished easing up. He is unquestionably a high-class racehorse and on his showing today can beat anything in training around New York. Proper finished with a sensational rush after being sharply interfered with on the far turn and ran like a crackerjack. Lux Casta displayed phenomenal speed for seven furlongs in disposing of Africander and unlike the latter she stuck to her work with surprising pertinacity. Africander forced a terrific pace and succumbed to it after going six furlongs, tiring very badly at the end. Igniter, suddenly improved, was closing up in the final quarter. Duke of Kendal was unable to withstand the pace. Yardarm also quit after going a good five furlongs. Scratched— 399873Bonnibert, 118; 400112Coruscate, 96. Goldsmith, show, out. Proper, show, 1 to 2. Jocund failed to get away well and" early fell in behind the leading bunch, bumping his way through on the turn and took the lead in the last furlong, holding it gamely to the end and won going away. Montreson was a prominent contender throughout and stood a long stretch drive without flinching. Prince Salm Salm, away badly, steadily improved his position and was running fast at the end. Pentaur, on the extreme outside, was outrun to the stretch, where he closed up fast and gamely under Bullmans vigorous finish. Cascine developed unexpected early speed and, in the lead when straightened for home, appeared like winning, but unexpectedly failed to stay and it would not be surprising if he had trained °ff Scratched— 398632James V., 117; 39889 White Plume, 114; 39916Thistle Heather, 114; Merry Moments, 109. Douro is in great form and equal to a big weight proposition over any distance or kind of track He went after the flying pacemaker when turning into the backstretch and passing him on the stretch turn seemed to be winning easily, but was desperatetly driven at the end to beat Flying Jib. The latter opened up a wide gap early and appeared like making a runaway race of it, but succumbed rather suddenly to the winners challenge and then changed his mind and came on again but too late to get up. Four-mile tactics on Surmise •were practiced throughout and Haack never did wake up. Colonsay probably raced into staleness quite badly when half the distance had been traversed.
