- : THE CHICAGO RACING FIELD. j With one less meeting held the Chicago j racing field produced 1,701 more in 1903 ! ; than it did in 1902. Had two meetings been j lield at Lakeside, as was the case last year, j the increase would probably have reached the 0,000 mark. Comparatively the local tracks make the following showing: 1902 1903 i Washington Park, 1 meeting.92,725 16,470 i Hawthorne, 4 meetings 189.5S0 204,492 Harlem, 4 meetings 1S7.725 200,283 Worth, 2 meetings 137,925 145,611 ; Lakeside, 1 meeting 7S.300 31,000 : Total S6,305 98,006 Two meetings in 1902. ! In some respects this is a satisfactory j showing, but the local tracks should do 1 better in 1904. They have had four exceedingly prosperous years and some adequate ; Teturn should be made in increased offerings to owners. All the local clubs do very well in the line of liberal stakes, but the purses are not what they should be. Some ap- ; proximation to the New York standard in this feature is due and would greatly serve to induce leading western owners to race their horses in the west instead of going east at the close of the Washington Park meeting, as too many have done in recent years. Last year S. C. Hildreth headed the Chicago list of winning owners, with a total of 55,520 won. This year the honors and profit of leadership fell to F. Cook. Last year his horses won ,433. This year they landed S,766, to which his splendid two-year-old English Lad was the chief contributor. This year Hildreths earnings fell away to 0,198. Edward Corrigan won the substantial sum of 3,235, which is more than his stable earned everywhere last year. That good turfman, Captain S. S. Brown, won 0,358 in Chicago this year as against 0,510 in y02. John A. Drake fell from 5,840 in 1902 to ,820 in 1903. Middleton and Jung-bluth, J. B. Respess, P. Dunne, Durnell and Herz, C. R. Ellison, James Arthur, E. E. Smathers and J. F. Newman, all have reason to think well of Chicago racing this year, but G. C. Bennett was unlucky, with 1,515 as compared with 8,777 won last year. This year 149 reached or exceeded that sum. In the Chicago field the winner of the American Derby always heads the list of winning horses, so this year The Picket is first with the substantial sum of 7,225 to his credit. Last year Wyeth was the leader, but his total was only 1,-975. In this years list the two-year-old English Lad is second, with winnings of j 7,105. Last year Flying Torpedo was sec-I ond with 0,760. Then Lucien Appleby was ! third with 9,715. This year he was well j down in the list with the comparatively small earnings of ,975. The two stars of the western turf, Dick Welles and McChes-i ney, were close together, with 5,610 and 5,465 to their credit respectively. The ! winners of ,500 or more were: ! Horses. Amt. Horses. This year the promising youngster, L. "Wilson, shows first with the creditable total of 107 winning mounts, another rider unknown in 1902, H. Phillips, landing second with eighty-nine wins. Domlnick was third in winning mounts but first in percentage, and but .for increasing weight, which kept him from riding in low scale races, this excellent jockey would probably have been first in number of races won as well. J. Reiff achieved a good percentage, suggesting that his work in the saddle was better than some inexperienced critics declared it was. Helgesen and Adkins achieved creditable records. W. Robbins fell away from his record of the year before. Ferrell was riding in excellent form at the end of the season and may rank high next year. The jockeys who won three or more races were: Jockeys.
