NOTES OF THE TURF. Jockey T. Burns announced Monday that he had married Mrs. Richard Clawson last spring at Washington, but had kept the matter a secret because his contract with W. C. Whitney stipulated that Burns must remain single. Mrs. Clawson is the daughter of James McLaughlin, the well known trainer, and her first husband was the jockey, Dick Clawson, who died a few years ago. It was rumored a few days ago that Burns might be re-engaged by Mr. Whitney for next season. Trainer Richard Miller said recently that the champion three-year-old Africander will be able to race next year. The Star Ruby colt did not have a bowed tendon, as at first believed, but was suffering from a blow on the tendon which was cured by the application of poultices and a good boiling out. J. B. B., St. Louis. The bettor, not having specified in which race his bet on Ahumada was to apply, it is fair to conclude that he meant whichever race the horse was started in. Secretary Hopper received word Tuesday from San Francisco that stable room there will be at a premium, as more horses than ever will make the trip to the coast. Last year. there were, ninety-five nominations to the Burns Handicap and this time the number is reported to have reached one hundred and fifty. The leading jockey in Austria is a boy named Bonta, who learned how to ride from John Huggins, W. C. Whitneys trainer in England. He has headed the list for two years and can do ninety-five pounds. Taral, who stands second, will sail for America from Hamburg on November 5, on the steame Auguste Victoria. George C. Bennetts horses have been retired to winter quarters at Memphis, where they will be joined by seventeen yearlings, the get of his stallions Lucky Dog and Kings Counsel. All of Bennetts two-year-olds next year will be of his own breeding. J. B. Respess has purchased the three-year-old filly Mary.Lavana and she will become one of the broodmares on his farm at Woodlawn, near Cincinnati. She was a very fast two-year-old, but. in poor form this year. Eugene Leigh will return to this country shortly for a brief visit. He has been fortunate abroad this year, Jiaving won in France somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred races with horses trained by him. Joe Yeager has been admitted to membership in the Metropolitan Turf Association. Torner, Terre Haute, Ind. The wager should be considered a draw, Reliance having failed to start. George J. Walker, long trainer for J. w. Schorr, was married at Memphis Wednesday to Miss Mary OHearne. Walker has accepted an engagement to train abroad next year.
