NOTES OF THE TURF. William A. Murray, who succeeded Jake Holtman as the starter at Latpnia for the remainder of the season, will inaugurate the system with which Mars Cassidy and Chris Fitzgerald were so successful in Canada and the east. Instead of having the horses line up at the barrier and break from standing positions the field will line up about fifty feet from the barrier and come to it walking. Dan Hanlon, owner of Sly -and other -race horses, has been on the lookout for a good rider for some time, and last Saturday he succeeded in signing jockey Willie Haack, who first came into real prominence at the BCenings meeting last spring, when he was a good second to Redfern. Previous to that he had ridden fairly well at New Orleans. "Pug" Garcia, who was suspended at Oakland in 1900 for a poor ride on Somis, was recently reinstated by the California Jockey Club and will be seen in the saddle soon. Garcia can ride at about 100 pounds and be-j fore his suspension gave promise of making i a good rider. He is under contract to George Davis. At the sale of the Hendrie horses in the paddock at Latonia Thursday morning Khaki was knocked down to J. W. Chick for 50; Bargee went to Johnny Ferris for 75, and Grand Marais was sold to Walter Wells for i 35. Johnny Mayberry has shipped the Ellison string to New Orleans that is, seven of the bunch went to the Louisiana town and Judge Himes, Skilful and Esherson went to Memphis to rest up during the winter.
