Tax Man ran in improved form and finished gamely, but was doing his best" at the end to stall off The Major. The latter finished fast and probably was best at the weights and would have won with a stronger rider up. Pittacus ran a winning race from where he broke and finished fast. Arrah Govan came fast at the end. The Guardsman was in behind horses all the way and could not get clear. Princess Tulane and Moderator were used up in early racing and both quit badly. It was a poor race for All Gold. Cottage Maid was a contender to the stretch, but tired at the end. Clear the Arena forced a fast pace, from which she tired, but held on gamely and managed to win by a narrow margin. With a good ride Fort Hunter could not have lost, was taken all around his field on the turn, but finished fast and all but got up. Sourire began slowly, but made up a lot of ground and finished gamely. Lady Mirthful is a consistent filly and her race was a good one. Reveille was poorly handled throughout and has run better races. Burdette ran poorly. Donnelly and Sea Gate rushed up fast in the first quarter, only to tire badly. Manilian, a consistent performer, forced the pace all the way and held on well at the end under a drive. R. B. Sack was prominent all the way, but he was short and thed badly in the final quarter. Cheval dOr fenced poorly and came near going down two jumps from home, where Black Death came to grief. Ill Used fell early. He showed but little speed in his last previous effort, but was a contender all the way today and came fast in the final quarter, but was doing his best at the end under a hand ride. Robn Hood ran a good race and made a determined effort in the stretch, only to tire in the last hundred yards. Reliance began slowly, then came around the field at the stretch turn and made up a lot of ground in the stretch, finished fast and might have won but for swerving several times in the final sixteenth. Lord of the Valley and Graziallo were used up in forcing the pace and Graziailo was eased up at the end. Overweights Orthodox, 3 pounds; Robin Hood, 5. Orthodox, show, 3 to 5. Nor- ; bury won in impressive fashion. Under restraint to the stretch bend, he displayed a fine : turn of speed when called on, easily went away from his field and is worth remembering : in better company. Silver Foam came very fast at the end, but was under punishment to stall off King B. The latters effort was a good one and he might have been a keen contender with an even break. Heir Apparent snowed speed, but does not seem able to stay. The Captain finished fast after getting away poorly. Grantsdale lacked early speed and was interfered with on the turns. Caxton came fast in the stretch, but tired in the final sixteenth. Scratched 42S30 Meteorite, 103; 42843Tax Man, 95; 42774 Albany Girl, 95. Corrected weights Effie Sheppard, 95. Taylor rode a hustling race on the winner, had him under the whip in the first quarter and Circus took kindly to the punishment. He kept closer to his field than usual and came around the other horses in the stretch to get to the front and won going away. Sheriff Bell finished fast and gamely and outlasted Highlander in the final drive. The latter was much used in racing on the turn into the stretch and tired when hard pressed. Lord Badge showed speed, but could not last. Lord Advocates race was a good one in such company. Wire In ran well for five furlongs, then quit and his race was not up to expectations.
