Sweet Nell is a bad actor and was responsible for the delay at the post. When the start came she was off well, raced up to Josette in the first quarter and carrying her along at a fast clip won going away. Josette showed speed, but was tiring in the stretch run and driving to the limit at the end to stall off Filly Deck. The last named finished fast and would have been second in another stride. Louise Elston could never improve her position. Sweet Nell, show, 2 to 5. Josette, show, evens. Filly Deck, show, 6 to L Louise Elston, show, 1 to 2. SECOND RACE 3-4 Mile. Purse 3400. Julia Junkin is a rapid breaker and opened up a winning lead before the others got to running well, but was tiring at the end and was doing her best to last long enough to stall off Spec. The latter finished fast and will show to better advantage over a longer route. Eliza Cook was bumped into soon after the start, came wide at the turn into the homestretch and was under a hard drive all of the last furlong. Little Jack Horner tired after going a half mile. He ran away a mile while being exercised this morning and this probably took the edge off his speed. Balm of Gilead was interfered with soon after the start and Walsh kept him on the outside all the way. Joe Goss finished fast. Alpaca was never a contender. This was not her race. Atheola was well ridden, kept in behind the leaders for the first half, came through on the inside at the turn into the homestretch and finished fast. Noweta began slowly, but caught Bard of Avon tiring in the last furlong and finished gamely. Bard of Avon tired as if short and was much used in chasing Whitmore in the first six furlongs. The last-named quit in the stretch run. Bluemint trailed along in the rear division all the way and did not run her race. Scratched 413S83Ida Penzance, 103 : 42630 Bob Hilliard, 94. Cvorienne outran her field all the way and showed great early speed, but was tiring at the and had to be hard ridden all through the last furlong to stall off Annie Max. The latter was wearing Cyprienne down and would have won in a few more strides. Ethics made up a lot of ground while rounding the far turn, but was unable to improve his posi-tion after getting to the leaders. Ernest Parham war, never a contender. Throw out his race. The latter made up ground while rounding the turn into the homestretch, but tired after getting to the winner. Ralph Young did his best throughout. Banwell was under a drive all of the last furlong.
