FIRST DEAD HEAT OF THE SEASON OF 190C. Columbia Girl and Van Ness Finish Together at Crescent Park Sam Hildreths Dream. New Orleans, La., January 24. Cold weather did much to decrease todays attendance at the bid track. Improved track, conditions, however, was instrumental in improving the sport and close, exciting finishes were the rule in nearly all the races, for the first time in many years a dead heat was witnessed here. It. was in the fifth race when Aan Ness and Columbia Girl finished so close together that I lie judges were unable to separate them. Both owners were willing to divide the purse and as it. was a selling race, both horses were put up for sale according to the rule. V. IS. Ellison announced today that he had engaged jockey Sewell to ride Lady Navarre in the Crescent City Derby. Jockey I.ucien Lync left tonight for his home in Lexington, Ky. He intimated that he might ride at Hot Springs. The report of a contemplated match race between Lieber and Guiding Star, is absolutely without foundation, as Newton Bennington, owner of Guiding Star, expressed himself clearly sometime ago concerning his aversion for match races. Furthermore, no match races are sanctioned by the AAestern Jkey Club. Newton Bennington was trying to sell Guiding Star a week ago for ,500, but it is not likejy lie would care to accept that price for him now. His victory today was his sixth In succession. Howevef, Sir. Bennington has put. him In with the rest of the consignment to be sold by S. J. Wallace the first week in February. James Uobertson had a partial hearing liefore the stewards today. None of the testimony was given out for publication. A. L. Asle will be here Monday and will remain about a month to watch his horses run. Before he leaves he will probably have a weeding out sale. Sam Hihlreth was telling his friends today that the night before he had dreamed Aan Ness had run a dead heat with some horse at a mile. He could not remember the name of the horse and then Aan Ness came out and ran a dead heat with Columbia Girl at 5 1-2 furlongs. It was quite a coincidence that both horses are by the same sire. Loyalist.
