DR. GARDNER WINS POTOMAC HANDICAP. Public Fares Better Conrieds Defeat Causes Comment Harry Stover Assaulted. San Francisco,. Cal., February 2. Dr. Gardner marked his reappearance after a recent attack of sickness by a brilliant achievement in the Potomac Handicap at five furlongs, defeating the fast sprinter Fireball with the greatest ease at his favorite distance. Barney Schreiber, owner and breeder of the sensational colt, won a tremendous wager on his victory. Four winning favorites gave the speculatively inclined public a brief respite after the deluge of successful outsiders for the past two days of disaster. The defeat of the odds-on favorite, Conried, at a mile in the closing race of the day may lead to developments of a sensational order. This fast horse was unable to maintain a position within striking distance of the leader at a slow jiace, although in his preceding effort over a sprinting distance, lie ran forwardly throughout and was just beaten by Inches, six furlongs in 1:121. Starter Dwyer was applaifUed for his perfect start In the second nice at a mile, in which eleven more or less unruly horses were engaged. Harry Stover was, assaulted during the afternoon by a colored man who wielded a razor, but failed to do any harm. The man with the razor was ejected from the track and that ended the affair "White Hat" McCarthy was held up, beaten and robbed last night by footpads. Nevertheless he made his appearance at Oakland today seemingly none the worse for wear. Jockey Prior exhibited a check for 50, his riding fee on Dr. Lcggo in the Burns Handicap.
