CHARGE GAMBLERS WITH SUPPORT OF BILL. Memphis, Tenn., February 10. A sensational storv was printed here today in which it is alleged that gamblers were behind the passage of the Riee-Ligou racing measure by the last legislature. The charges are made the gambling element, embracing representation from Memphis. Texas. Nashville and St. Louis, hoped thereby to force the retirement of the merchants, bankers and other influential people interested in the New Memphis Jockey Club. It is alleged that the gamblers had been advised that they could operate under the Rice-Ligon law with subterfuges to shield pooliug on race tracks which was provided against by the dead racing bill. Already steps are lieing taken to preserve racing from an anticipated attack in the next general assembly.
