: ; MARIUS n. TO TRY FOR THORNTON STAKES. A. B. Spreckels Enters the Thirteen-Year-Old Stallion in Oaklands Long: Distance Event. San Francisco, Cal., October 29. norsemen will be surprised to hear that the English , stallion Marlns II., which, with Solitaire II. has "lieen .at the head of the Spreckels Stock Farm Stud at Napa, is to be put in training. Marius II. lias never raced in America, and the experiment of racing him after several years retirement will be watched with interest. He lias been entered in the Water-house Cup at two and one-quarter miles .and the Thornton Slakes at four miles. , Marius II. is thirteen years old. He Is by St. Serf, out of Sunny Queen, by Newminster. Sunny Queen was sent to France from England in 1S92 after being mated with St Serf. The following spring Marius II. was foaled in France. He was not raced In that country, but was taken to England as a two-year-old by Monsieur R. Lebaudy, and was raced by him three seasons, being then sold by auction to O. D. Ross for ,250. He later passed to E. Cassell and it was in his colors that he ran his last race, in. 1898. In 3902 he wasrbronght to America and was placed in the stud at Mr. Spreckels farm in California. Klifidale, China and Frank Flesher are among his two-year-olds now racing. . Marlns II. was a good racehorse in England. . He won ten of his twenty-seven starts. At two years of age he was second for the-Stewards Nursery ifandlcap at Hurst Park, conceding twelve pounds to tlie winner, six fnrlongs, six starters; third for tlie noughton Stakes, Newmarket, beaten a head for tlie place, the Rowley mile; unplaced for the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood. At three he won tlie Hartwell Plate, one mile, at Northampton, 124 pounds; won Montefiorc Plate, one mile, at Gatwickr third for the Walton Welter. PtnnineTWandtoh Park; Von the Regulation Plato walkover, one mile, at Hurst Park; won the Curfew Plate, one mile, at AVindsor; secoud for the Eaton Plate, one mile, at Chester; won tlie Chatsworth Plate, one mile, at Derby; unplaced for the Allistrae Stakes at Derby, one mile, seventeen starters. At four lie was second for the Lincoln Autumn Handicap, one and one-half miles, conceding winner age and eight pounds; won the Gopsall Plate, two miles, at Leicester, seven starters; won dead heat Kempton Park Handicap, one and one-half miles; second for the Halnton Stakes at Lincoln, one and one-half miles, beaten a bead, carrying twelve pounds, twenty-three more than the three-year-old winner; unplaced three times. At five he won the Castle Ashley Handicap, one and one-half miles, six lengths, ten starters, top weight; third for the Southeastern Handicap,- one and one-half miles, eight starters; next to top weighf; won the Goodwood Plate, two and one-half utiles, by three lengths, seven starters; Won the CJiampncy Handicap, two miles, six starters, top weight; third for the Kempton Park Handicap, ten starters; third for the Harewood Handicap, Kempton Park, six starters, top weight; second for the Northamptonshire Stakes, 151 pounds, conceding twelve pounds to winner; unplaced for the Ascot Stakes and Durdans Handicap at Epsom.
