COMES NEAR THROWING AWAY A RACE Aubuchon Eases Up Pretension and Austin Steals Up with Beacon Liqht. Hot Springs. Ark.. March 10. — Jockey Aubuchon had the scare of his life at Oaklawn today and the hearts of about nine out of every ten of the spec tators were in their mouths for an instant. It happened iu the fourth race, the handicap at six fartoaga. Auburhon was riding Pretension, coupled in Hie betting with Savable as the Cliinn entry, and as near a cinch as one ever sees on a raee-tr.uk. Al the post Pretension was virions and it was with difficulty that he was prevented from doing injury to the other horses, but they got away to I good start and Pretension moved into the lead on the far turn. It was clear that he held everything safe and as the final sixteenth was entered Aubuchon began casino up. He had not looked back and was not aware that Austin had come through next to the rail with Beacon Light, as the turn into the stretch was made, and was rapidly closing up. Aubuchon. in his confidence disregarded the shout!" of warning from the exciled crowd, but Pretension got to the finish just a nose in front. Had there been another stride to go he would have lieen beaten. The jockey was lectured by the judges. Attilas defeat by Big Bow was generally cril icized. Cursns. which wa-. disqualified alter winning Thursday, showed good form and won as his rider pleased. Ben Strongs presence in the closing race caused wholesale withdrawals and left the race practically a walk over for him. Shirley Rossumrc Beared another set of brackets in the o|ieniiig race. Starter Dade left tonight for New Orleans and will resume his duties at fhe Fair Grounds Monday. William Snyder will aaeeeed him as starter here and finish out the meeting. Judge Clarence Mr Dowcll will upend the coming week in the stand at New Orleans. He will leave there next Saturday night for Benning. No decision was reached in fhe Request case. In all probability the judges will recommend that she be barred from starting here in future. The entries for Monday present no striking features, but genrally speaking, the horses seem well classed together and with such useful performers as Rifle Range, Merrifield, Spunky: Flarney. Etta Louise. Oroha: Sorrel Top, Ina Gray. Belltoone: Tivolini, Wing Ting. Beertier: Ruiloba. W. K. Slade. Nine; The Abbot, Dr. Lee Huffman and Demo among those entered, the racing should be up to the aver age local standard. J. L. Dempsey.
