■ ~ * TAME RACING AT JAMAICA. BUTTLING HAS SCANT COMPETITION FOR KINGS COUNTY HANDICAP. Colonel White. Unbacked by His Owner, Wins at 60 to 1, and Is Bid Up— Close Finish in Closinq Race. New York. May 7.— The racing at .Tatnalca today was tame ami imiiiterest ing. The second, won by the long shot. Colonel White, and the last, in whicli Rusciino and Divorcee put up a rattling finish, were the only races furnishing incidents that even smacked of excitement. Colonel While was meeting a Moderate lot of selling platers in the second race, but the public did not give him a thought. It was possible to uel til to 1 at the close and at stages there was as g.MHl as 10t to 1. Colonel White, hy running the first Quarter around the turn in 2:lg secon.ls. o|.eue.l up sucli a gap that the others never got near him until well into the stretch. Here he was tiring fast and had to he ridden out to get home first by a length from ReidmiM.re. Colonel White runs in the name of R. T. Nickerson and is trained by Frank Frisbie. The owner was at the stable at Sheepshearl Bay during the morning, but did not go to Jamaica, as he said the distance was too much for Colonel White and he had no chance to win. Frisbie evidently had the same idea about the horse, as he only liet third, with positive orders not to place the money unless the prlee to show was as good as lO to 1. The at inlds were obtained. Not only did the owner and trainer fail to take advantage of the opportunity for a bfg profit, but they had to stand a run up that took the purse away. Colonel White was entered to be sold for ,000 and was bid up by Phil T. Ohiaa to 01,000. Frisbie protected the horse for the extra 03. Colonel White at one time belonged to Chinn. who lost him through a selling race. It was Frisbies first winner since he returned from Russia, a year and a half ago. The track was muddy and some of the fields were badly cut to pieces by scratches. The weather was clomly and threatening aud the crowd the smallest of the meeting. Three favorites won, while Thomas Calhoun shared the position with Marion Mean in the opening race. The rejuvenated Buttling won the Kings County Handicap. There wer oi ly two opponents. Philander and Rye. Buttling was many pounds the best, coming away at his leisure in the closing furlong after waiting on the other two. Divorcee was heavily backed to win the closing race, going to the post at 7 to B with Walter ■filter uii. Rusciino, the first horse to race for John Shields since the young horseman began business on his own account, led all the way. In the closing drive it appeared to some of the spectators as if Divorcee got up, but the judges placed Ruscimo tirst. Spring Heel would have beaten them both except for a slow beginuiug, due probably to inexperience. Tomorrow is getaway day and with the Suffolk Stakes for the leading feature, the card is hardly np to the average of the meeting. Still, with such horses as The Dane. Alauda, Sweet-taire; Masan-iello. Qatea Brady, Kttteehaa; Doily Spanker, Lally, Shenandoah: Tartar Maid. Masks and Faces, Thomas Calhoun; Oyama. Sir Toddington. Berkeley; Halifax, Robin Hood and McCarter among those entered, the racing should be fairly interesting.
