CALIFORNIAS BUSIEST RACING SEASON Nearly Half a Million Dollars Distributed for 960 Races in 160 Days. San Francisco. Cal.. May 2.3.- Since the opening of tin- present season of racing at Oakland, November 17 last, the New California Jockey Club has distributed among the horsemen nearly a half million dollars. To be exact, the distribution in stakes and purses for the 960 races decided during the tirst lC,o days, ending yesterday, was !ยป4.2i!5. The meeting will dene June 22. making a total of is? days racing. S. C. Hildreth. heads the list of winning owners with forty-two races and Jf.Tl.140 to his credit. The unfortunate feature is that many owners came here with horses that are hopelessly outclassed, and it is next to impossible to condition a raee in which some of them could he given a chance. It is remarkable how some trainers will persevere year after year with live or six year old maidens. hoping to eventually land some kind of a race. This was a disastrous day for the talent at Oak land.
