CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE LADIES STAKES. As the longest established American slake for three-year old lillies. the Ladies Slakes has been won bv some very famous mares. Katie hat won it for the Mi-Daniels Confederacy when that powerful si .hie dominated the eastern turf. She area .pule the t.iueen of the turf of her day and among other iac won at fo.r mile heats over the old Baj District tracks at San Francisco when a four yea r-oltl. Olitipa. Sultana, I ci Mia and Aella were all excellent racers, but the next really great one after Katie Piasc was Miss Woodford, which, in 1863, 1884 and 1886, was invincible so far as her own sex was con earned and nearly ,, against all batata of her day. Fireiize. the winner in 1N.N7. was a second edition of Miss Woodford, a greet in. ire up to any distance and weight. Yorkville Belle was also a very high class mare. In more recent days Blue Girl, BohUinic and Perverse were all worthy successors in the oipiine line of fame to the grand males singled out for mention. Like the Belmont, the Ladies was originally a Jerome Park stake and was taken i.mt and maintained by the Westchester Pacing Associal ion after Jerome Park was claimed by the city of New York and made a reservoir in its system of water supply.
