THE COMMONWEALTH HANDICAP. Tlie decision of such a great race as the Suburban is generally followed with the suggestions that some of the contesting horses were unlucky in Its running and would have been able to produce a different result if not cut off, pocketed, bumped or subjected to some of the other mischances that do vitally affect tlie progress of horses when essaying to attain, the limit of their speed. It was to afford the admirers of tlie various horses defeated in the Suburban an opportunity to tost the truth of their theories as to what might have happened but did not, that the Coney Island Jockey Club founded the Commonwealth Handicap in 1904. It is it the same distance as the Suburban, and with its rich endowment of 0,000 added money is but little lower in point of value. From the start it has been a race of the highest Interest, but, oddly enough, no Suburban winner has as yet started in the Commonwealth, and so far it lias always fallen to a three-year-old, Ort Wells, Sysoiiby- and Sir Huon having won it when of that age. Possibly the monopoly of the three-j.ear-olds may be broken this year. The Commonwealth weights were made public June 27. Since then Frank Gill has incurred a five pounds penalty, raising his weight from 105 pounds to 110. Cottontown has also gained a penalty of three pounds and his impost -is now 110 pounds instead of the US first allotted him. As appearances now go, tlie field will come from the following list of eligibles: Dr. Gardner, 124; Xealon, 12.5; Dandelion, 117; Flip Flap, 115; Running Water, 115; Cottontown, 110; Tokalon, 115; Blandy, 112; Montgomery, 112; Tangle, 111; Frank Gill, 110; Gallavant, 110; Salvidere, 110; Kereheval, 109; Far West, 10S; Ironsides, 107; Wexford, 100; Tony Faust, 100; McCartor, 104; Philander, 104; First Premium, 104; .Miss Crawford, 100; Faust, 100; Court Dress, 99; Gretna Green, 05, and Lord Lovat, 92. Of these Frank Gill and Salvidere will in all probability be saved for the Lawrence Realization, and if McCarter and Tony Faust start in the Spindrift this afternon they can be marked absentees from the big handicap. Fuller is more likely to rely upon First Premium in preference to Tokalon. Running Waters form has been poor so far. She may be sent to the post, but it seems improbable. Various considerations point to tlie horses in the table following, which gives their racing records for 1907 and their best time scored this year at a mile and a quarter, or closest to that distance, as those that probably will be sent to the post.
